You got that right. I could actually tell what most cars were in the video. Nowadays they all look the same, driven by pampered crybabies.

    Cool clip.

but I have a couple stupid questions...(I'm not a NASCAR fan)

1> if it's 1960, how come all the cas are from the mid to late 50's or older? I thought they always used current year (within a couple) cars?

2> Wasn't the pace car for 1960 an Olds? Or was that Indy?

    Just curious.

What an awesome video.. Being so new to the car thing, a lot of these videos, pictures and stories are very foreign to me... I'm as ignorant as they come, but because of the HAMB I'm getting and education real quick.... Thanks for Posting!!!!

It was the 250 mile Modified-Sportsman Race, and didn't those old cars look cool
without all the corporate logos of today!!

Looked more like Enduro races I was in about 17 years ago. Even they have evolved to more high dollar ventures today.

We started 200 full sized cars on a 1/2 mile dirt track once for 200 laps. Some of the carnage looked very similar to this.

I got this clip as part of a history of Nascar DVD set a few years ago and I've watched it to death, and still will. I find myself catching more details each time. I was amazed at the amount of damage on cars that returned to the race. Some others showed the ravages of rust and age the way they were torn apart.

No drivers suits being worn either. T-shirts, slacks and loafers were the uniform of the day. No officials standing over you in the pits to make sure you had your shirt ****oned.

Not this race, but Cale talked about cutting a hole in the floor of his early 60's Nascar entry to see when the cords were starting to show on the outside front bias ply tire so he'd know when to pit. Now that's gutsy racing! ! ! ! !

Back when stock car racing was done with actual stock cars. Not purpose build racing vehicles with some body panels attached. No wrap around seats, no power steering, etc.
Wonder what would happen if a race was today held with cars from that era?
Build 40 1960 rules cars, 1960 technology, put 40 of today's drivers in them. No radios, no spotters, no modern stuff. I am sure almost no one would want to because of the danger factor.

Posting speeds of 139.373 on the track in 1960 was quite a feat considering what they were running on and with. (i.e. bias ply tires and still very near street stock equipment.)

Lighter cars and better equipment got in the mid 170 mph range by 64. But all in all, gr*** roots STOCK CAR racing will always impress me.

The wreck was caused by air getting up underneath the front end of a few cars. This was untested ground for many of the entrants and they were totally new to the speed at Daytona. Even the GN guys struggled with back gl*** blowing out at that time.

You said it, man. I never thought I'd say this, but I didn't watch ONE NASCAR race this season. And I like Jimmy J, too! He's a nice man, but I'd take the OLD Tony Stewart or Terry Labonte any day. But now it's too damn predictable === boring.

In the old days, guys drove actually STOCK cars and SCRATCHED for points. Now NASCAR is like drinking skim milk or one of those GD soft drink that ALL now have corn syrup instead of REAL sugar in them. Ta hell with it.
