As the owner of a couple "rubber axle" Vettes, I am amazed that the OEM IRS's were able to handle the brutality of 10 sec times. I wonder how many of the C2's that have been posted were converted to live axles to avoid grenading the stock rearends or multiple u-joints. Nowadays I know they can modded to be strong but back then...not so much.

  4. I love the look of the early Corvettes with the raised front and rear ends. They look so bad a**....and I bet the anal restorers just get in a tizzy over it. Maybe another reason I like the look so much :)

29 Rats- pretty cool pics. the white 62 is owned by a friend of mine in Detroit. The fawn beige 61 is similar to the first Vette I tried to buy. If my memory is worth a damn it was in 1968 and it had mags and was for sale at a used car lot in Detroit. It had a 283 with a three speed manual but had a hole in the driver's door about the size of a bowling ball-right thru the door-never figured out how it got there. They had a price of $600 but my dad told me that I was not going to buy a Corvette so just forget it. He figured I would just get in trouble with it.

Triggerman your right on the rear axles and I know guys that raced them and had troubles. I had one friend that switched to an Olds Pontiac rear. I am sure there were some guys that made the "stock" rears work.

There were so many of these old Vette drag cars and God only knows where they all ended up. Tracking down the history on some of these cars is a bit tough. I have two old drag cars and know little of either. If anyone runs across a picture of a 61 Vette with a chopped top feel free to let me know. I bought this car a few years ago. It was built by Larry Teter in Elgin Illinois and was owned and driven by Lou Price. I corresponded with Larry Teter's daughter but she knows nothing about the car and said her dad built a number of cars. It ran a big block Chevy and a four speed. Tube chassis car with a straight axle and Pontiac rear. It was supposed to have run at Byron and later at Gainesville, where it hit the wall and was then discarded. Needs a lot of work and is on a back burner but would appreciate any pics if at all possible. There cannot be too many 61 Vettes with a chopped top.-Jim

Geez Jim, I've disassembled my factory hardtop and it is a maze of pieces. I don't want to contemplate trying to chop one of those tops. You obviously have a unique piece. I also like the lift off front end, it is similar to mine. It makes working on the engine sooo much easier. What a monster that would be with a 427 or 454 in it.

I know what you mean about working on the hardtops. I have rebuilt them twice and both times I used a record number of expletive deleteds, especially installing the rear window. If you notice the top chop was not too difficult as they kept the lid stock and then did away with the quarter windows. Still it was a bit of work. The driver Lou Price was supposed to be over 6' and so they rockered the seats. I can only imagine what fun it would be shifting the gears while rockered.

As to the liftoff front end it actually is just a clip sitting on top of the shredded fiberglass as a result of hitting the wall at Gainesville. I have seen a few tilt front ends of this vintage. I like them but some of the purists may be get light headed at the thought.-Jim

  20. I know that this hot rod Corvettes, but I thought you would get a kick out of what my buddies did to my Corvette on my wedding day in 1968. I sure wish I still had the knock off wheels from this car, they were beautiful.

    Great Thread.
Does anyone from North Jersey (Bergen or Hudson County) remember a "63" gold color "fuel injected " roadster with Cheetha II, painted on the front fenders.
It was modified in 1963 and prowled the streets. I still think about this car after all these years, and I've owned 15 mid years over time. I should build a clone.
Jacked up front end, five spoke's , wheels Ballanger headers. The owner was Louie Yezo.

  22. Having worked in a Corvette resto shop for 10 years I was afraid there was going to be a lot of what we called twenty dollar millionair cars ,owners with just $20.00 in ther pockets either eat or buy driving gloves( usually bought driving gloves) But this is REALLY A GOOD THREAD........ Im enjoying it!!!!

Now these are cool Vettes. Not like the ones you see around the turtleneck sweater crowd.

I saw this fuel injected 57 4 or 5 years ago at a NCRS show in Marlboro, MA. I was blown away that it was there one, but you should have heard this car!

    Note the roll bar inside...

I don't have any notes on this, but, If I remember correctly, the owner was the original owner. The car ran in Milton, VT (old, old drag strip)...again...dont hold me to that, but,, thats what I remember.....

This is one that was on ebay about 5 years ago. I often wonder what happened to it. I love the stance the hood work the cut bumper, etc...Things that "your not supposed to do to a corvette..." I believe it was out of MN. It is a well done custom corvette from the late 60's or early 70's. I love how they de-chromed the trim from the cove.
