A "nice" older car used to be what we thought of as a good place to start. Now they're seen as something to preserve as they are. When I went to Tulsa in 1976 a 40 Ford coupe was 36 years old and was thought of as an old car. Today that same difference would have us thinking of cars made in 1975 as old, which we don't. Unfortunately, it's all about time.

In my area and time, if someone said your car is "nice" or "clean" it was a BIG compliment. I guess one of the current terms is "rad".

I quit accepting others opinions of cars especially if they are only marginal gear heads. I always ***ume it's a POS until proven otherwise. I try to believe that the misleading is based on ignorance of the subject and not out and out attempted fraud until proven otherwise. Most people just don't understand. A little knowledge can be a nasty thing.

    Besides if it's in my price range I know it's a POS.:D

  5. You're en***led to think it's a lame thread. I don't care. I just was curious why a nice car meant just that at one time. Nowadays it seems like people attach the word nice to any piece of ****ing ****. And I'm just curious WHY.

Nice depends on locale. What is considered marginal in a dry climate area is "mint" here in the rust belt.Up here if it doesnt collapse when loaded on the trailer it's nice.

  7. If the HAMB had a ****on I could click that would encourage people to preserve their cars and not allow them to deteriorate on purpose, I WOULD CLICK IT!

  8. This is a " nice" thread - lame but nice
wife # 1 was a nice girl - POS woman but nice
wife # 2 had a nice rack, fake but nice

Nice is an adjective based on a subjective opinion of the opined.
Its a ******** word that has ZERO objective or empirical meaning.

Nic can only be determined on YOUR personal frame of reference. Perhaps you have also changed your frame of reference, you have access to some pretty desirable cars- that alone will change what you think is nice.

Semantics are fun. Nice, said as a description is a compliment. Nice, said by a seller is always suspect. I think the first caveman to sell a used stone wheel lied about its condition.

Totally depressing when you look though for sale ads and look at what is described as a "nice" car only to find it ripped apart and too many man hours required to fix it. And they want way over what its worth.

Now my cousin found a "nice" 66 Olds, four door, started right up, drove around, needed some duck tape and some color sanding for $500.00.

So I guess in my mind, when a guy picks up a decent car for good money and its all there and runs, when you can say "nice" meaning good job to him then it is nice.

BTW - I'm loving these threads Groucho...keep em up. I'm all for that preserve ****on too! Most asked question of us right now is if we're going to chop our new 36 ford truck...hell no! Its too nice a truck to do that to.

John...to answer your question directly...the perception of what is "nice" has to be age/time appropriate. In other words...if you were looking at a 1969 Z/28 for sale in 1980 and it was in "nice" shape...it would be called excellent or mint shape today. Today a 1969 Z/28 in nice shape can have faded paint, be a little beat up...and so on because the car is 30 years older. You have to factor in the age of the car when you give a condition ***essment. I think you (and me) remember all too well what cars we had around here in Socal and LAMENT the cars that people today call "nice"...but the reality is....the cars are just way older and so are we.

No kidding! Also seems that alot of people have a different description of "no rust" than I do. To some people I guess it means you can't put your fist through any of the holes.......:rolleyes:

  16. since alot of you on this thread seem to be grousing about the way people write their ads, let me try this one on ya.

1964 mustang. Lots of rust, but covered cleverly with bondo and the always eye catching 'resale red' paint job. Weak motor, ******, rear end, front suspension. Rusted floor pans covered with "NEW" carpet, and trunk rust covered with duct tape and a gallon of ryno hide. Daily driver (back in 64), won't make it around the block now. If you are looking for something nice, this isn't it. But, if you are looking for something you can ***** about to your buddies for years to come on how I screwed you royal, then this cream puff is right up your alley. Price will be based on how much you piss me off at time of sale.

Now the real ad.... 1964 mustang. new paint, carpet. daily driver. nice car for the money. 4500.00 firm, obo.

I live in central ill. so "NICE" is truly a relative term here. if it has a ***le and a few rusty bits its restorable.

  18. Groucho my definition hasn't changed much from your 20 year old definition. I suppose there are still some of those out there. Not nearly as many as when we were comming up but they no doubt still exist.
