Years ago in a car monthly magazine I saw a story of someone who put a car body on the chassis backwords and was driving it around. If my memory is correct the car was a 1959 or so Chevy Impala and the car was being driven around San Francisco in the early 1960s. This does sound crazy but there is photo proof to back this up. Anyone know who did this and the magazine that had the photos?
There was a 65 GTO that was reversed like that when it was fairly new. It's been featured in many magazines over the years.
I think there was somebody did it with a Pinto (or maybe it was a Gremlin?) to see if it would go faster and it did. Chris
I remember that 59 Chevy picture I used to have it. I think it was in Car Craft probably around 1964 or maybe later.
Many stunt cars have been set up this way for the fast reverse scenes. Disney, or one of the studios had a stunt show at the theme park with crs jumping and skidding all around a chase. One of them was mounted backward for the reverse chase scene.
Back in the late 40s or early 50s a 27t roadster ran on the dry lakes with the body reversed for streamlining advantage. Pictures were in one of the early Hot Rod annuals. deChrome
http://www.americanjetcars.com/photos/miscpics/misc3.htm The "Back-up Pick-up" wheelstander,Cannot seem to post the pic.
They did this on mythbusters not too long ago, to see what direction would get better mileage. They used an 80's Porsche if I remember right.
This was done by someone back in the early 1930s with a DeSoto(?) sedan body and it got better mileage with the body reversed.
I wouldnt drive it or build anything like that,I can imagine the comments ,That guy is ass backwards ,Has no direction in life ,And my favorite what an ass.
The GTO is still in the St. Louis area and was at a local car show last summer. The back-up pick-up was built in St.Louisby Holley Swindle and raced at Alton, Il dragstrip. It was a stub nose Falcon.
We always used to say you could put a "Bullet-Nose" grille of a '49 Studebaker on the back end and you couldn't tell if it was coming or going!
I remember the magazine article and photos. I'm pretty sure it was Road & Track in their April Issue. They used to do a spoof on themselves called Rod & Truck. One year they did a road test on Route 66, the actual road. Kurt O.
That car was at our NMCA race/show last year. Crazy looking to say the least...too bad Gateway closed right after.
