Scrap is thru the roof now....

Denise, depends on the price of scrap by you and the weight of the machines. if you take what i'm getting for sheet metal at $200 a ton, that breaks down to .10 a pound. Just guessing not knowing what brand or model numbers but if they are 250 to 300 pounds for the pair then you would be looking at $25.00 to $30.00. If price is less by you or if the weight is less then it will be less naturally.

 

Call ahead, one of my local yards won't pay for less than 300 lbs at a time, although other yards I've been to will scale anything.

Also, electric motors are worth more than steel, I've gotten 35 cents a pound for them in the past, and also insulated #2 wire (the cords and wiring from your washer/dryer) was bringing $1.10/lb not too long ago, so if you've got nothing to do, pull out the motors and the wiring and scale that separately. Could be $30 or $40 there by the time you're done, especially the older ones which are heavy.

 

Theres a new salvage yard around here, 2-3 years old. They are buyers of all kinds of scrap including cars with a crusher on site. Its the type of place that if you see something you want you better get it today as it might be gone tomorrow and the prices are right. I have a habit of looking in cars and truck beds for good stuff and came across this tool tray the other day laying in the mud, along with a Ford later model dealer service book about 4" thick that was in an S10 cab, and my brother needed an air intake hose for his Ford Exploder. Gave $10 for all three items. Theres more labor than that in the tool tray.

I blame the prices on the weak dollar. It kinda hurt me seein some stuff from the 60s gettin squashed. The yard I went to today hires shady people cheap. I swear they love to beat the***** out of stuff so nothing is salvageable.

So educated guess approx $25-$40 since both machines are about 23-25 years old. Certainly worth a trip to the local yard on a Saturday in the middle of winter when there is nothing else going on. Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated. Merry Christmas!

About the time I've saved enough to buy what I need the price goes up. It's a moving target!

Copper and brass can be more volatile than steel if the demand is up there. From yard to yard, you may see a difference. I'm on Long Island, but when I had a sizeable cache of copper or batteries, I'd call a few places in Brooklyn. Quite often it was worth the ride.

So would you be willing to spend $25-30K on a full restoration of such a car? More? With that logic we should start doing 6 figure home remodels in depressed neighborhoods as well. I think you may have missed the point and only focused on resale value. I'm not starting a pissin contest here, just to clarify. It's a discussion so don't take it personal. In all of this that we do, that 1 item, resale value, is there whether you recognize it or not. For some it's motivation and for others it just happens. No matter what it is there has to be some financial responsibility in the mix. It has to make some level of sense. In the case of this car as brought up it would be foolish to do such a thing. Restore from the ground up at great expense with zero thought toward the "what if" some time in the future. The reason some cars are so popular and subsequently more valueable is their market demographic. Who doesn't like a Model A coupe? A Deuce tudor? A Cuda (any motor)? But how many really have lust for that slant 6 gramma car? Make sense?

 

I caught 2 different people on their way to the local scrap yard today and bought cars by offering them 300 dollars more than I thought the would bring across the scales. A very rough rusty 55 ford station wagon and about the same condition 70 buick with 455 engine.. If you have some working capitol hang close to the entrance and if you want somthing make offers..

 

Making my first trip to the scrapyard on Saturday with a truck full of stuff I've been "collecting". I'm anxious to see what I'll get. I've already called ahead and since I'm friends with the only gal that works at the yard I get the friends and family best price available plan.

I noticed at a local scrap yard the other day was an old 1st gen Econoline. I don't really ever see anything of value but several years ago a buddy of mine and myself were riding back from supper and noticed some stuff left out in front of his local scrap yard. This particular scrap yard would let you just drop off old fridges and such. This was before scrap got way up there. We went and got my truck and rode back. We loaded up a small block chevy, a tiller and some other odd stuff. Everything we got was good. Now days people will fight you over that stuff to haul it off. I've got some stuff I'm going to scrap out but nothing really great. There's alot more people doing it now than it was a few years ago. Worst thing is that theft has gone along with it. My mom has bulky item pickup once a year were people can throw all sorts of stuff out to the curb for pick up. I don't let her throw anything out that I think that might cause a stir at her house. Made the mistake of throwing out some window weights and some guys were fighting over them in front of her house. No more.

dirty alum is .20 lb
clean alum is .40 lb
brass copper radiator is .40 same for electric motors,

 

just saw a guy hauling a 57 chevy pickup to the scrap yard next to my work on Tuesday...i almost thru up...even all of the glass was intact. Gonna try to save some of these if I can.

What's the difference between dirty and clean alum??
I've got a BUNCH of old windows, door walls, strom windows and screens. All made out alum framing.

 

clean is all aluminum, with no steel, rubber, plastic parts attached.

Quick question then, old AL framed screens for house windows, would that screen mesh be made out of AL too or ???

I took in one washing machine, one dryer and one furnace, all with motors pulled out and seperated. I got a total of $62.85!! I was thrilled! I'm going into the scrappin business on the side.

 

say you US guys go to the scrap yard with a bunch of old fenders and engines, average scrap, how much per ton will you be paid? i think up here we would be lucky to $70 per ton.

 

I haven't hauled in about 5 weeks but the last trip in I got $220 a ton.

 

Might be plated steel screen or AL. Magnet test will tell. But you still need to remove steel screws if any, as well as rubber strips holding the screen in and any other non AL stuff.

 

Took a 80's something 4 door Impala last saturday and got $442.50 for it with the tires and gas tank still attached....$270 a ton around here.

 

As of Friday around here, scrap iron was $104/ton and clean aluminum was $0.40/lb.

I"ve been carrying scrap to the recycler for a couple months now. I have a cut up VW van on my trailer going in Mon. Last week I had a clothes dryer and some brake drums with a bunch of VW rocker arm****emblies,a bumper and a wheel barrow full of small stuff. Net 780 and got $89.70 cash. That is stuff I used to put on the curb for someone else to pick up. Easy work for the money.

 

I took a 50 merc to the scrapper thursday, I have had it listed for sale for about a year, had it on here several times, complete car, engine and all, no one wanted to give me the 500 I was asking for it so it is now gone, it was rough but it was a merc. I cant just save it forever in the hopes that someone will come by someday and buy it, and I cant just donate it so it is now gone. Jim

 

I would have traded it for some beer or gave it away instead of scrapping a complete '50 Merc...

December and January so far have been the busiest months for us, so I know scrap-iron prices are high. Doesn't look like it will drop any time soon, neither.
