George the "Stone Age Man" Hutcheson.....he may have attached a gay red plume to his helmet,
but this guy had balls of steel, he'd drive anything!

If I remember correctly, Jack was injured, the incident, prior to '64. He was driving the Super Comet in '64. Plus all the rails had 'Christman Crosses' installed at that time. His injury must have been sometime in '63, but cannot remember exactly when or where. Don't think Pomona though as I worked there during that time frame and would've remembered that.

My bad, sorry about previous post on this subject. Happened at Pomona after I left for boot camp. Wasn't the Spaghetti Benders car, with Rick Stewart driving, the one that lost the front axle in the lights at Pomona and ended up catapulting over the Porter-Ries car that he was racing? That was '63, about L.A. County Fair time (Sept.) as they had those big rolls of snow fencing out and he hit one of them after the flip. They used the snow fencing for designating parking areas.

Jack was one hell of a driver! To spend that much time in the hospital and come back and rip up the drag strip is amazing.A true drag racer.

Um...something tells me you're not familiar with the details of the "incident". Let's just say what you typed is more than just an understatement.

Jack was a great man that most of us young racers looked up to. When that terrible accedent happened needless to say it was a huge eye opener to the sport and what the result could be from pushing the boundries of racing and the safety equiptment or lack their of. I 'm very familiar with the accident and the actual details. Though beyond the obvious behind the incedent my focus is on his contribution after the crash, he had the spirit of a lion.

After being in a few track crashes myself resulting in minor injuries, I could only imagine his fealings as he strapped back in the car for the first time after the carnage. Not just any car, a supercharged funnycar before they were called funnycars. A poineer.

  15. Muttley;I've never seen this shot of Bud's car before. Obviously from when it was converted to a Hemi, before Bud got his sedan. Knowing that the real '64 Hemi hardtops were all steel(TTBOMK),I wonder if this ran with the original aluminum front clip? I also wonder if the doors were aluminum at this point;a pair found their way onto this car,and were still on the shell when I had it. Had I been able to keep and restore this car,it would have been a difficult choice as to what variation to have done it in. Original,off-the-floor(sans livery)? As-raced Stage III MW car? Hemi/single headlight conversion? Twin-turbo Hemi w/ '65 front clip? The mind boggles!

Interesting as well is the Jenkins Competition logo on the rear quarter,at a time when I thought it would have had "Specialties By Spehar". Hmmm, gotta check on that for my own knowledge.

    A couple more of Bud's car-in motion!

It was from an ebay magazine ad, I copied the scan of the cover and cropped out the rest of the stuff.

So is the Motes and Williams car running today a completely different car from the green car? Was the green car a different car from the red/pink/orange car they ran back in the day?
