In case you were wondering, that is a Douglas A-20 Havoc and is probably on the Douglas line at Santa Monica. WW2.

Manson thought that Terry Melcher still lived in the house when he sent his crazy followers up there to kill Melcher for not signing Manson to a music contract. They walked right in the open front door and found Tate and her friends instead. In those days no one had guns so Tate and her friends were dead ducks. After that (and the LaBianca murders) everyone in Hollywood had guns and locked their doors.

  13. Looks more like a '42 Lincoln to me but I may be mistaken I'm no expert on those cars. But I'm quite certain it is NOT a stock '39 Lincoln.

Cut55, you are so right. Tate and company were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Given the era (and Sharon's trusting, c'este la vie attitude toward life), they were caught like fish in a barrel when Mason's goofs barged in. The victims had to have been in total disbelief as they were butchered, with no coherent explanation from the attackers.

I should mention that I was never a Sharon tate fan, but I felt the grizzly murders of her, her baby and all her friends were abhorrent.

As the record shows, the only good thing to come out of the mess was Tate's mother and sisters' successful efforts to amend laws nationally to recognize the VICTIIMS' rights in brutal crimes such as that -- not just the attackers'. Secondly, people immediately started locking their doors and protecting themselves. Steve McQueen even went to one of the funerals with a gun on his person. Yeah, Steve! Our kind of man.

I am sorry if this post sounds political in any sense. The whole episode was a messed-up angry action by a druggie wannabe musician against an ill-chosen and innocent target.

The continuing references to Martin Milner and George Maharis
in the popular "Route 66" anthology-drama series has had me
thinking about one of my favorite Rt. 66 episodes. On October
26, 1962, during the show's third season, writer Stirling Silliphant
did something quite different, really just a Halloween lark! He
reunited '30s/'40s horror giants Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Jr.,
and Peter Lorre for a field-day Episode #68, entitled "Lizard's
    Leg and Owlet's Wing."

The loosely contrived plot had the three former baddies assem-
bled to evaluate whether their old-time style and movie makeup
could still thrill a generation decades removed from their horror
heyday! Humor and tongue-in-cheek pathos figured in heavily,
as Maharis, Milner and the old masters enjoyed the TV romp.
Looking back, I think it was very considerate of Silliphant to do
this throw-away episode as a tribute to a film style long gone
and to the actors who'd plied the trade long ago. Lorre passed
away just two years later, with Boris following in '69 and Chaney
    in '73.

That is the Sunshine Special. Used by FDR. It was originally a '39 Lincoln. The styling was updated in '42 to make it look more like a new Lincoln. Currently on display at The Henry Ford. I believe it was used until '49 or '50 when Harry Truman got a new bubble-top Lincoln, also on display at The Henry Ford, along with Kennedy's Lincoln.

I bought radial recraps about 30 years ago. They were not very good.
