Today I was traveling the backroads of Maryland's Eastern Shore in my non-descript daily driver S-10. In front of a house a good 100 yds. off the road sat an early dirt style stock car,(appeared from that distance to be a Ford Coupe, '38-'40 vintage) with #99 on the door. Behind the house I could see a garage with a large Ford blue oval on it. I wanted to stop and say hello, but didn't want to risk getting shot. I'll never know if this was the home of a fellow HAMBer or not. If not, I missed an opportunity to "spread the gospel" and tell this guy what he's missing. Maybe we need some sort of "peace" flag with HAMB on it to wave as we slowly drive up to a strange house. Any suggestions. If someone knows this person, and he's already on here or if in fact he reads this, sorry I didn't stop and intro myself. I would have liked to take a closer look at that early stocker....Don:)

Opportunity missed:( Oh well just, convince yourself that you would be recovering from a gunshot wound if you had stopped. OR..................... dragging home a cherry '32 3w for $500 that the guy insisted he would be taking advantage of you had he taken the $1000 that you offered.:cool::D

I to have played head games at the chance to find the barn find!!

Took me two red lights 3 years ago ( I just kept driving away and trying to find the courage go back and ask) from a car lot, before I realized the person who came out was not going to shoot me and eat me. Just tell youself, they want like the way you taste.

That u turn resulted in my 65 goat. You don't need a flag, you just need some of that lion's courage in the Wizzard of OZ!

that's what you get for not driving your old car that day.. no one (almost) with a blue oval painted on thier garage would shoot a guy in an old car coming up the driveway.....unless he was in a Chevy.

Don't be too sure of that. Head of Quality, at my old job, went to Boone county West Virginia, for a couples rafting trip. He and his better half got lost on the way there, so they pulled off into a driveway, to get a better look at the map. As he is fumbling through the pages, he feels the nails of his wifes left hand digging into his right arm. "YOW! What the hell is wrong with you?" Her eyes fixed straight ahead. He looks up to see an old man standing at the end of the hood pionting a double barreled shotgun at his head! Slammed it into reverse and floored it out of there. To this day, he swears he'll never go back there, ever again.

If that guy had an old ford coupe out front and a blue ovel on the garage he probable gets a lot of guys stopping buy.........Then he shoots them and eats them and makes roll cages out of there bones!!!! It's called a decoy, I think duck hunters use them!!!

you really worry about getting shot for knocking on someone's door, I think you need to unplug the computer and get out more often

....You're right and I probably will go back and stop next time. It was very cold, very windy, and I was tired from helping a friend move over in Delaware. I'm sure the guy gets lots of people stopping by just to say hello. My post was a little "tongue-in-cheek". I've knocked on many doors and never been shot....yet:). Was just hoping someone on here may know who he is and if he has been exposed to the HAMB......Don.

I'll walk right up to a door, garage, or old car with no problem ... and this is in Texas. I've never been yelled at or anything. Ignored maybe, shunned away, but usually people are willing to talk or atleast say "ain't fer sale". My friends are all scared to take action when they see old tin, I call them pussies. No need for a "friendly flag", grow a pair, pack some heat, or just keep driving.

I tried the old truck bit once and it bit me. On my way home from an auction I took some back roads like I usually do, up in the driveway of an old farm house sat a '56 Ford pick up, stock and not looking like it had been moved in quite a few years, I slammed on the brakes and took a closer look from the road. I thought if I went home
and got my '56 and drove into the yard they could see that I was into old cars and maybe have a better chance at looking at it. So, I pulled in the yard in my old truck the next day and knocked at the door, I could hear the tv was on inside but nobody came to the door, I knocked a few more times and just hung out for a while and still nobody came so I left and came back the next day. Drove the old truck again, I pulled in the yard and saw the truck had been moved out back somewhere out of site
I have been back by a few times and have never seen it around again. Someday I will pull in and ask about it, someday Scott

Years ago,pre cell phones,I'd tell the (ex) wife I was goin' explorin',and would try to get home early....yeah,suuuure...Take off by myself, drive out to the boonies, and at every fork in the road, choose the worst looking road.Found some very cool stuff, and met some really cool folks, and drug home some good stuff.I'd be so far back in the woods,my watch would stop, and the road would disappear behind me.And if I saw something promising,I'd jump out, knock on the door, and introduce myself.
I wouldn't do it now.Too many ****ing crazy methheads with guns, and they like being off the beaten path, too.

I can't speak for everywhere on the Eastern Shore, Don, but down near the beach there aren't any meth labs.

Don't see all that many cool cars from the road though.

If you go back, just dress like the locals do,not like a government man or a city slicker.

Go get your self a Ford blue oval hat and a get er done t shirt, trimmed sleeves. The guy won't want to shoot you, he'll think you're his long lost brother from another mother.

Hey Lothiandon, you should go back. Pick me up along the way, us native 'shoremen have a peace agreement. If nothing else, we'll spread the gospel a bit. I'm about 10 miles east of the bridge.
Oh, and I believe I know where that car is... about 3 miles down is a wrinkled up '55 dirtcar, that guy is pals with a buddy of mine...

I always found that being polite works...
I do like the idea of a HAMB friendly sign on the front of the shop, though. I wonder if Ryan would have any objections to that...

i was born and raised in rural southeast West Virginia and unless you know someone(being friends with Jessco White on fb doesnt count) and know exactly how to get there you do not wander into Boone County, they're not too fond of strangers.

I have been run off more times than not. Usually with a warning of being shot if I return!!! I don't trust the neighbors either. Been told that a vehicle could be bought next door but it cannot. I guess they enjoy watching me haul *** away from there! peace

from the sounds of your discription of his car and his place, you probably wouldnt have to spread the gospel to him.

If someone has stuff like that just sitting out, I doubt you will get shot unless your lurking at night, or look like trouble, who knows it could be a hamber

.....I was somewhere between Greensboro and Ridgely on (I think) state route 480, heading West toward rt. 404. I will definitely go back sometime in warmer weather. I gotta believe the guy doesn't mind drop -in visitors or he wouldn't have the stock car parked out front for all to see. I'm not interested in trying to purchase the car, don't even think it was for sale. I was just thinking about spreading the gospel of the HAMB experience. I know a lot of older guys ( I guess they would be my contemporaries ) that are deep into the kind of cars we love, but due to a lack of exposure to computers, don't know a thing about the HAMB. I know that's hard to believe for us here but it's true. Thanks for all the advice guys, even the ones who implied that I am such a *****:D...Don.
