12v power for gauge

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by DanBabb, Jan 28, 2011.

  1. Installing the controller for my cl***ic instruments speedo/tach combo.

The controller needs 2 separate 12v sources. Instructions say one should be dedicated.

Can I pickup the dedicated one off the ignition switch? I'm using the rebel wire harness and don't think I have an extra power wire to use.

IGN side of the ignition switch shoud work. Otherwise if there are any spare circuits in your fuse block, you could utilize one of them.

If you do tap into the power at the ignition switch, be sure to fuse it before the gauge. 10 amp fuse will usually cover it unless otherwise noted in the gauge instructions.

  3. Thanks. Didn't think of needing a fuse on that wire. Appreciate the help.

I think dedicated means hot all the time, I'd call and find out before going any further.

No they are both switched 12v. They are isolating the power for the speedo from everything else to prevent interference with the speedo signal.

Make sure it gets it's own ground too. It is usually not necessary but it sure does save time if you ever have to troubleshoot anything.

dontlifttoshift is spot on. no "hot" wire to gauges all switched
an amp gauge would be the exception

  9. thanks guys. Plan to finish the cab wiring tomorrow.

I talked to cl***ic gauges, you can use our gauge pwr wire and jump from to both terminals.
