Yea, I need to remember that it is "just an old car" thanks. My wife says I worry too much about stuff.
I did some repair work to the metal above the gas tank. Then I cut the bottom out of the gas tank and cut off the gas cap. I hope the guys at Ford Barn don't see me ruining a perfectly good gas tank.!
Been working on the inner fenders and I need to get the old sub rails out to finish that area up. Filled some holes on the firewall and a couple cracks, don't know if I will have to cut up the firewall for the engine, but now I have a clean slate to work with.
Raised the front corners of the sub rails to be in line with the rest of the subrails. tore out the flooring sheet metal today and set the body on the new frame for the first time, time to start thinking about building the new floor.
got my wood kits and put them in. it took a lot of pushing, prodding, and prying but the wood ended up fitting pretty good. it stiffened up the top of the body pretty well too.
Cut out the old sub rails in the back half of the car. I kind of hated to cut out that much of the car. It seems like there's not much car left. I built new sub rails and the 1st sub rail I built I made all the cuts I needed to and clamped it in place and welded it. When I took the clamps off, the sub rail moved as it had warped during welding so I had to cut it apart and do it over. When I built the 2nd sub rail I only made 1 cut at a time and welded each cut before cutting another and welding it. Doing it that way worked very well. 2 sub rails ready to go.
I figure I will chop it, but I don't know how much. I think I will wait until the last thing before paint so I can sit in it and see what's comfortable to see out of.
I just came across this build thread, cool stuff. For waiting 2 1/2 years to start, you sure are on fire now. I don't think they look too bad on full fendered cars but on a fenderless one they look kind of funny. We have a deuce tank on our coupe & we think it looks pretty good. I've posted these up before but I will put them up again for you to see. Too late for this build but maybe on your next one. I have yet to slice & dice the filler pieces for between the fender & the frame stub but they will eventually go on the car too.
Got a laugh when you mentioned your 10 year old. My daughter has been trying to drag me into 2011. I Pods, Computer etc. So in return I will show her how to put a match book cover under an 8 track tape to only get one song playing........lol
I got my wood kits and some other stuff from Mac's Antique Auto Parts in New York. Took 5 weeks for it to come but it is good stuff.
Once the wood was in I pulled the top together to start nailing. I had to remove about 1/4 inch of wood at the front of the header to get the visor to fit. I took out 2 inches out of the front spreader bar and it actually fits.
I got a couple frame horns and fitted them and put them on so now I can have my 32 tank on the back. I made a couple 3/8ths spacers and put one on each end of the spreader bar, that seemed to help to get things in better alignment. Finally I boxed the horns a little, I think it's stronger and looks better.
Glad to hear you were happy with the top wood kit you got from Mac's as I need to order the same thing. Sounds as if it fit fairly well. Following your progress. You're doing a great job, keep those pics coming.......
Did some sectioning on the back so the tank and body don't fight for the same space. Ended up taking out 1 and 7/8ths inches. The panel was very rusty on the back side and tough to work with, I got it welded but it looks just a little rough, it will work ok though.
