History CHEVROLET's name???????????????

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by LANCE-SPEED, Jan 12, 2011.

  1. Don't forget these guys:

Flanders - Walter E. Flanders for whom the Flanders automobile was named.

E-M-F - Barney Everitt, William Metzger (formerly of Cadillac), and Walter E. Flanders (Henry Ford's former production manager).

  2. And a city right up the road from me called "Oldsmar"

  3. 1 out of three
His name was Karl Benz. Mercedes was some other guys daughter, a factory driver I think
    Correct
Plymouth binder twine (really, look it up)

  4. Wow, quite a rant.
I tried, just quickly in my mind, to amass a list of cars NOT named after someone. It's a pretty short list and most, if not all, have been around for some time. There are the acronym cars, SAAB and FIAT. There is GMC (not an acronym). Nissan, been around since pre WWII. Subaru is named after a star cluster, so they may be hiding behind a bogus name and a phalanx of lawyers. Saturn, clearly an homage to the aliens who have secretly infiltrated the upper echelons of corporate America and the Government and are, even now, controlling our thoughts. There could be a link between them and Subaru, but it is, largely, unsubstantiated. I believe they are, also, behind Victory motorcycles and it is a prophetic statement. Hyundai (rhymes with Sunday) and Kia are made up names, so avoid them at any cost. They are evil. Acura, Lexus and Infiniti don't even exist in Japan or most other countries. No one is hiding, however. They are a ploy to get stupid Americans to pay a premium for cars that are badged as Honda, Toyota and Nissan in most other markets. It's working quite well for them

Actually Mercury comes from Roman mythology. Greek name would be Hermes. Chopped Herm coupe doesn't quite have the same ring to it somehow...

  6. All I know about Greeks is you need to beware of them when they're wearing sneakers

The 3rd Chevrolet brother - Arthur - suffered from depression, and, sadly, ended his own life in 1946.

He is in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame because he was one of the pioneering builders of the cars in the 1930s.

Almost all of the pioneering car builders were more inventors, tinkerers, engineers, or mechanics than business men. MANY of them were ousted from their original companies because of this.

Billy Durant was an exception, but that's a whole other story....

I'll play. How about C Harold Wills, builder of Wills St. Claires? He too was an ex=employee of Henry's. You will find almost all the pioneers worked for and with each other in the beginning.

  10. Not completely: Leland named his car after the first president for whom he had voted, which was Lincoln.

Now that last names have been covered in this great thread, now let's find some that were named for a FIRST name!

I'll start with the ever so obvious EDSEL (Ford).

  13. I have a half one, Alfa Romeo was originally known as ALFA, (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili) then Nicola Romeo bought ALFA in 1915 and his surname was added.

    Dino.

  15. Well done.
I once worked at a Ferrari dealer, but had forgotten about the Dino. Many think it is a "Ferrari Dino", but like Clippers and LaSalles it is a stand alone make'
Mercedes has been mentioned already. There can't be too many others

  16. Best I've found: Clinton E. Woods. Made in Chicago '97-'01 by - Clinton E. Woods!!

The reason, possibly, that few cars would be named for anyone's first name is that, prior to WWII, many men were known by their initials and surname, ie: P.T. Barnum. England more so than the USA, but nevertheless, this was the tradition.

Note that the examples named are POST-WWII cars.

I can't believe nobody has mention John DeLorean!!!!

He was part of the team that developed the GTO and Firebird.

I heard from a Packard guy that he designed the Twin-Ultramatic that was used in '55-'56 Packards, too.

And after falling and hitting his head on the toilet, he came up with the idea for the DMC-12, which is what makes time travel possible.

  20. My all time favorite is William CRAPO Durant. He founded GM and there was a Durant automobile, named after him.

Cadillac was named after the 17th-century French explorer Antoine Laumet de la Mothe, Sieur de Cadillac, who founded Detroit in 1701. ...

Buick scotts born David Dunbar Buick, founded as an engine manufacturer.

Failane was Fords estate name, Meadowbrook was an Estate near Detroit.

    Edsel was Henrys ONLY son.

Fairlane and Meadowbrook still exist today.

He doesn't have a car named after him (that I know of) but Albert Champion has two auto parts companies named after him. Champion Spark Plugs and he is the AC in AC Delco.
