Features Ford Thunderbolts Photos Wanted

Ford issued MSO's (Manufacturers Statement of Origin) to the dealer and if your state was a title state you could apply for a title. I have titles and plates for both of mine. If you note, many of the T-Bolts back in 1964 had license plates. In MI in order to legally flat tow a car it had to have plates. If you hauled it on a trailer, it wasn't required. However, in many cases as time went on with race cars not driven on the street, the titles were never reregistered in the current owners name.

Seriously, I thought that was the best way to define the reconstruction of that car. Allegedly DeLisio took the AWB shell and at the trim line grafted it to a donor Fairlane "platform", then installed all the bolt on items, i.e. hood, fenders, doors, deck lid, seats, interior, etc ... . I never saw any "in process" photos of the grafted body to the platform. The last I knew a Pontiac part guy, Ames, in the MA area has the car.

Oh yeah, it's a perfect description but with the use of the prefix "re" in everything these days it struck me funny. You know, recreated, repurposed, etc.

 

Schneider's model A parts in Ohio owns a couple, including the 1st one built. They have a great little private museum.

I'm in the process of buying a 64 Fairlane 500 to turn into a clone. Who is the best person to talk to about all the details to build a GOOD replica? I want to build a streetable show car clone.

I guess it's better that the car was saved, as long as it doesn't get mis-represented. Besides, the burgundy cars have some unique items and are a bit different than the white cars.

Like the M/T Thunderbolt? Extensively "rehabbed". I agree, it is good it got saved. I don't know why I thought it got scrapped, I must have heard or read it somewhere. I've never seen it, did they do it justice? Man, just think if the front clip ever showed up. Things could really get interesting. Did Ford stamp the vin on the aprons in '64?

The difference with the M/T Hemi car, was I never understood why the original car was rebodied.

The VIN was stamped on the front aprons in three places.

In 1964? No, unless you consider Clifton, Virginia Beach, or Farnham VA close.

James or Jim Alger was the driver, Maxey Gentry was the mechanic.

That's what I'm trying to figure out. The driver was my dad and he went by Jim or James Alger. He's had a stroke & doesn't remember much. We moved about 20 years ago & all the info he had about the car was lost. He said the car was bought from somewhere around Charlottesville or Richmond Va. That is also where he raced, he was almost killed in a AFX Comet later after driving that car. The car was maroon. I don't know if he bought it from a dealership or secondary from an individual. This was before I was born so I never saw anything but the pictures.

 

This Ford engine is a few years earlier than '64, but it has a T'bolt conversion on it....

 

Suggest that you post the photos of the car to help identify it.

I thought I had put this in the other post. The pictures were lost in the move 20 years ago so I can't do that. Sorry, I didn't say that earlier.

 

Slightly off topic -

Back in '98 I lived in Rhode Island, and my wife's mini-van was stolen and burned up in Boston.

We were shopping for a replacement car and stopped by Tasca Ford. They had a Thunderbolt in the showroom for a Christmas display (didn't belong to them). There was a model A sport coupe and a '65 Shelby in the display with the T-Bolt. While checking it out, I asked the salesman if Bob Tasca was still alive. At that time he was, and the salesman walked me into his office. He spent about 30 minutes talking to me and my wife - going through his history with Shelby and the 428CJ mustangs. He claimed that the T-Bolt were his idea - and that he built the first one in his shop as a prototype. Not sure if that is true or not, as he said the same thing about the Cobra roadsters.

 

OK, do you recall what year(s) he had the Fairlane and what year(s) he had the Comet. Any details on the FX Comet, color, what year, etc ... .
