Heres my e-mail

Ya would have made even more cause I have just been getting the 2 lb rolls , been waiting for the 12 lbs ones to come on sale lol ! On a good weekend I can use most of a 2 lb roll ! It wont be long and the heavy welding should be winding down.

I spent about 8 hrs re-working the trunk lid and its opening yesterday  still got a ways to go yet, a friend suggested early on to just weld the fucker shut ...it would have been a lot less work ! Oh well the end of the trunk lid drama is in sight...sorta

You really show me up for the slacker that I am. You seem to get more done in a weekend than I do in a week. I keep revisiting the beginning of your project just to remind myself how much work you have accomplished.

I like what you have done to the beltline and it was nice to see the gas door finally disappear. If they haven't read about your build, people just won't believe the story behind this car when you are done.

Maybe if I turn the heat down in my shop I'll work faster.

I look forward to new updates.

Dont laugh but I revisit it and look back at the pics from the beginning as well to keep myself motivated, when I get overwhelmed at how much work lies ahead I look at where it was at a year ago and that keeps me going on those days when I dont really feel like it. This thread and all the positive feedback has been a surprising incentive as well. Sometimes I feel guilty if I go too long without any update pics !Hopefully after next weekend I will have some pics of a decent fitting trunk lid to post !

Still working on it ...but I am more pleased than I thought I would be, I have to reskin the bottom couple of inches on the outside that will allow me to get a nice even gap on the bottom I should have some pics next weekend. Saw the doc again this week ,he gave me a new precrip ,took one this am and it really helped but they are kinda strong (never checked the label to see what it was lol) So I will only take them when its important, like when I need to get some shop time in :D. Hes sending me to a specialist but that will take awhile.

Heres a thread I started on the old Dodge kustom, you never got a good look at it in the garage all covered up.

Great stuff that you started a thread on the Dodge! Good luck with info gathering and ignoring the "helpful" comments that some people offer. ;)

Watch out for those back-pain meds. They just mask the problems and allow you to do too much. But you know that, I guess.

  12. Awesome build thread! Can't wait to see updates.

  13. Wow dude, I'm impressed!
I'm building a 46 Merc right now that started out just as rusty as yours, but it was at least already a coupe from day one.:D
I begged the owner to let me chop it, but he would have none of it!

Here is the start in September 2008 just to give you an idea of the rust issues. Like I said, it was just as bad as yours!

    hey koolkemp

I thought I had some metalwork and welding to do on my 36, but the amount of work you have done to save this car is a credit to you. Keep up the good work.

Ya wanna know whats really funny, I saw pics of your car in bare metal on here when I started the coupe conversion and thought ,wow I wish I had a car that nice to start with lol! Its pretty rough for an Alberta car, you sure it wasnt originally from Ont or farther east?

  17. Th owner bought it out of Wisconsin about 10 years ago.
It looked real good in the pictures, however once I started taking it apart we found out it was all evestrough, pop rivets and fibreglass:eek:

I just read page 1 and page 46.

Somewhere in between there must have been another car purchased cuz I sure don't recognize this one!

    ;-)

Thanks for keeping up with this and sharing the pics of your work.

Another weekend of trunk lid work and back pain, but at least its all welded up and I am happy enough with the gaps , I hope I never find a mint trunklid I am sure it wont fit !

It didnt look too bad on the bottom but the gap was crooked, and there were quite a few pin holes along the bottom 2 inches..

I didnt have a piece of 18 gauge wide enough to make the patch in 1 piece so I made the ends first then did the center ..

Of coarse I had to rebuild the inner corners on both sides as well no surprise there really, cleaned up and sprayed the inside and back side of the patches with weld-through zinc primer

Skimmed over the welds with some Marglass, gonna sand that out this week and if we get the warm weather we are supposed to this week I can hit it with a skim of mud and get some epoxy on it...it has so many pits on it from all the rust that was on the skins I am just gonna skim the whole lid and sand er out !

I am torn between keeping the unique Monarch badge on the trunk or just filling it all in...its pretty rare to see any Monarch stuff anymore especially pre 49.... what do you guys think? If I decide to keep it I will likely lower it down about 6 inches.

  25. IMHO, fill it all in, make a unique car show sign using the Monarch emblem.

Sorry to read that your back is still in bad shape.

As for the emblem... will you put any other trim on the car? If so, use it.
If it would be the only piece would it look out of place all by itself?

You know the drill..... please yourself. :)

Great work, Steve. So, about the pot metal emblem . . . of course, back in the day, you wouldn't think twice about shaving it. Why? Because every car out there had lots of chrome, stainless, and badging. So, to be different, you had to de-chrome and shave. That is what we now call traditional ('cause that's what they did back in the day.)

IMHO, that shit is pretty cool. Takes me back to my youth in the '50s and '60s. There is no heavy badging or chrome today, so it really pops to me when you have it. It is one main reason why a stocker turns every head.

There it is. There is no easy answer. (All the hard-core traditionalists now chime in: It is easy, Shave It!!)

Hey Steve,I say shave it all off. It's all gonna flow real nice when you get paint on it,and any emblems left on it will take away frow the flow. Finally got my skirts from CANADA,if you want patterns ,let me know.IMHO

She coming along nicely. I know the feeling with back problems. Don`t think mine is as bad as yours but I have days and getting anything you want to do is a job in itself. The Badge is cool but the look your after is smooth and I think this will look out of place on a custom.

    Great progress Steve!

I'm also for the shaved look on this one. I love some chrome details on a car, and the the chrome badge will look great on the trunk for sure. But it will not fit the theme you have decided to use on your car. The molded in rear fenders and even molded in belt-line will not work well with the trunk emblem I think.
