i would like to get rid the single exhaust and the stupid cross over pipe that dumps into the other manifold. so was wondering if they headers for the 394 olds motors. 1964 olds 98.
I think you'll be building them. Ed's Headers used to sell flanges with pre-welded stubs to give you a start---you may want to check them out.
I think HEATHEN has it right. Never saw any header manufacturer list them in their catalogs in the 60s or 70s. Get flanges and build your own, or have someone build them for you.
We sell flanges for a variety of Mopars and the usual 'trick' is to find something that will fit in the chassis, regardless of intended use, and remove the original flange. Now, build a bridge between the flange and the pipe. .
how have some of you guys ran duels on your olds? my dad has got some exhaust manifolds of a 350 olds and someone welded the one pipe closed so they could run duels, i was thinkin of doing that to mine. have you guys done this or something else?
A few years ago my buddy had Sanderson build a pair of lakes headers for the 394 in his Model A, so Im sure they have the pattern for the flanges if you want to try and make your own.
Funny thing about this is that Sears had headers for the 54-56 Olds back about 58-59. I actually had a set that I had picked up. They were in the trunk when I crashed the car a couple days later. I managed to get the lid open and took them back to Sears. Today you are out of luck I think for store bought ones. Header Ed here in Mpls is probably your only hope. He may even cut a set for you if you talk real nice to him and ask about his experience with EFI in his streetrod. I think you would have a cobbled up mess if you try to modify something. You would have to be lucky to get something to come close to fitting let alone match up somewhat to the motor. How many set of headers are you going to be able to try out.?? Your best bet will be to remove the crossover and fab new duals. That will work for a street car. Muffler shop can do that pretty easily.
Olds made a dual exhaust manifold for the late 394 that dumped out the back or you can cap the forward flange where the stock cross over bolts up and run two pipes or buy a set of flanges from GOATROPER02 and build some headers
I have a set fo flanges for your heads that I will sell you cheap if you are interested; however its going to be no picnic building headers for your 64.
Not to Hi-Jack this thread, but I love, love this Rocket powered roadster. Nice job on the headers. JT Orlando Misfires C.C.
He also has the correct manifolds if you don't want to build headers. I wouldn't tell ya but manifolds won't fly for me.
I built a set for a local guys roadster after a search for headers or manifolds came up dry. These are just a simple 3 tube deal with 2 1/4 duals and it sounds killer. Good luck, -Abone.
This is the most sane approach. I have a 65 and was able to by repro duel exhaust manifolds from a guy in PA the problem is the steering box location thats why that pipe crosses over to the pass. side. I will look up the guy and post it. Pat
Go to a good muffler shop and they will make you some dual exhaust, if this is your goal. Unless you need a little more horsepower at a high cost, just go for a nice set of duals. Just my 2 cents. ~sololobo~
Most guys are going to charge you in the area of $1000 to build a set of in-chassis headers for a fifties-sixties era car, and with good reason. It is very labour intensive. Building headers for a hot rod is a walk in the park compared to a sixties era car.
I've heard worse ideas. If anyone thinks that this sounds like a "cob job", you haven't seen some of the attempts at building a pair of headers from scratch that I've seen. The Olds has the same 1-2-1 exhaust port arrangement that many V8s used, so take some measurements and start measuring sets of headers that you see at swap meets. Someone once told me that headers for Ford 351 C engines are spaced very close to early hemis.
I've heard worse ideas than this. If anyone thinks that it sounds like a "cob job", they haven't seen some of the attempts at scratchbuliding a pair of headers from 45s and 90s that I've seen. Since the '59-'64 Olds heads have the same 1-2-1 exhaust port arrangement that many V8s did, take some measurements on your heads and start checking out the used sets of headers you see at swap meets. Someone once told me that headers for Ford 351C engines are very close to the spacing on early hemis, and when a friend was building a flathead powered vintage stock car, he found that the old pair of three tube Pontiac headers that I gave him were almost perfect.
Back in the day '55 and '56 I had a 53 Olds88 2dr with Belond Equa-Flow Headers and steelpack mufflers. It was the best sounding car that I ever owned. Of course the company has been gone for a long time Wouldn't it be cool to find an NOS set somewhere?
