hello everyone.this i what i have done on my 1933 chevy roof , it is a camaro roof skin and i have it bolted down with 3/16 carage bolts .my plan was to use panel bond to glue the skin down and paint the car .are there any good ways to seal these bolts or should they be glued in before the painting? any ideas Thanks Doc

    Hey,

Is it your plan to put a ''real'' paint job on this vehicle someday? If so dump the bolts and the panel glue and hammerweld this replacement panel in place. Over time, the glue seam and holes will ''whitness'' through the paint if you jus glue and fill over the bolt heads. Small tack welds with .023 wire on your ''squirt gun'' welder will keep heat damage to a miniumal area. I'd go with a soft gas weld if I were doing this type of repair, easy to hammer and file with little or no need for filler.

i planned on leaving the bolts in .they are polished stainlees carage bolts and i used the exsisting holes that were there for the tack strip . the skin will sit on top ,dont want to cover the seam up, just want to seal it . i have a second roof and did think about welding it in ,but i dont much care for the smooth look . the other idea was to make a trim ring for what i have now and just cover the sheet metal insert with canvas and the bolt the ring down from the inside. The insert looks like it fits great but I'm not liking the bolt heads either.

  9. I like the bolt heads, I think they look like rivet's. Kind of a coach built look.

It all depends on the look you are going for.

I think it looks good. Something like silicone would be fine to keep the moisture out.

The bolts are fine. Carry the theme thru the whole car, and it will be great. If the roof is the only "bumpy" area, then it will stick out and look odd.

I ***ume you are going to keep the bolts unpainted? (seeing that they are stainless) Panel bond the insert, remove the bolts and paint the car, reinstall the bolts....kinda like that?

A dab of clear silicone sealer AFTER the painting would be fine. Before will reek havoc on the paint process. There are good automotive seam sealers to use too. If you are planing on painting the bolts, use the seam sealer after priming, but before paint.

Definately don't use silicone. That will cause the paint to fisheye and do all sorts of wierd things! Even if it is comletly cleaned and the slicone is not visible it will still mess up the paint. Silicone is wierd stuff!

How about automotive seam seal? It's been used successfully for years and you can paint it without problems

    We have a winner!

And as posted earlier stick to a idea and follow it through,,use the stainless bolts throughout the entire build, not just on the top. HRP

I think it looks good, but I agree that you should carry the theme to the rest of the car. What year Camaro did the roof skin come from?

I like the roof, it looks good. Not sure of the bolts though. I'm kinda tired of the whole WWII aircraft thing, if that's where you're going. Rivets always look good on Jeeps.

Again, the roof looks good. Has a nice crown to it and lays out well.

I like it. GM seam sealer #10952233, or other autobody seam sealers would work too. DO NOT USE SILICONE.

If you like the bolt heads? go with them, but don't use sillycone. To keep it simple I think you could use a fifty year elastomeric caulking like for windows or doors.

I like 'em too. a few issues back, Rod & Kustom had a dark blue survivor Model A coupe with a bare stainless roof like yours, high grade fasteners and louvers throughout the roof. It looked KILLER, and yours does too!

I'm going this route with my 32 5W someday, when I get to that point....if I ever do

for panel bonding I use a product called "Fusor". There are many types, one is a metal bonding mix. This stuff really works!

FWIW, I think the bolts look great. I see what you are going for and agree with others that carrying that theme in other place would be good.
Are there any soldering/ lead methods that would work?

The roof was from a 78 camaro and its turned around , I am going with the fuser panel bond to seal the skin to the body after i finish the body work and epoxy primer ,plan is to paint it right before the stainless bolt are installed with some sealer . the fenders also have stainless bolts holding them to the bracing and frame here is a pic of it in the first coat of epoxy(SPI) kinda dusty right now
