Has anyone else thought about how neat a 41-ish Willys kustom would be? How about a 48 Tucker? Unrealistic, but fun to dream about at least! Anyone else have any "Odd Kustom" ideas??

You chop up a Tucker, i guarantee someone out there will hunt your ass down.

I got no pics, but an '50s Packard could make a neat custom.

There is at least one customized (or street-rodded) or whatever you wish to call it, Tucker out there that I know of....:)

    That's not a "real" Tucker though. It's a completely fabricated re-creation.

So then most the cars on the HAMB are not "real"? Shall we discuss the Theseus Paradox for a definition?

OK Ed, ya got me with that one...what is a "Theseus Paradox"...????

And why would you ask if most of the cars on the HAMB are not "real" (I assume that's sarcasm on your part?)...a reproduction is a lot different than a production car manufactured by the Tucker company those many years ago. There's a definition of "real" I think you're missing.

    Theseus Paradox- think grandfather's axe.

After his return from Crete where he defeated the Minotaur, Theseus ship was kept in pristine condition by the ancient Athenians for centuries because they replaced rotten parts as needed. Eventually none of the original ship was there, so the philosophers started arguing whether or not it was Theseus' ship.

I know there's a few around already (mostly streetrod style), but I've think a GAZ Pobeda custom could look pretty slick.

  9. Ok how about it is a fiberglass reproduction of a Tucker then. I am not sure many would call a glass bodied '32 Ford "real" either

  13. I remember seeing a concept drawing of a chooped taildragger style custom Willys at one point and it looked pretty cool. Can't remember who drew it though.

I think Zombie drew that. It was in Traditional Rod & Kulture

I've always thought a Willys tail dragger would be the shit! This one is by the amazing Janne Kutja:

Back in the early/mid 90's, Custom Rodder featured concept art of a Willy's Custom that was gorgeous. I can't remember who did it though... I think Zombie did one in the last year or so also.

    Here's a cool model I found online:

48-50 Packard, one of the ugliest front end designs ever. Looks like a cross-eyed kid with a mouth full of jawbreakers. The back end is really sexy for a kustom. I have an idea that would incorporate some sections from a 51-53 Packard front fender, a shortened 46-7 Clipper grill, tunneled headlights, sectioned bumpers, and a pair of 47 style Caddy sombreros. Convertible or 2dr (2ds ar rare!), but a moredoor would be good pickens for sectioning in to a more conventional coupe. With an OEM 49deg rake to the windshield no chop would be needed. GO FOR IT!!

  19. Similarity between the Tibbs custom roadster and the Chet Herbert Beast could be described as odd.

Many years ago when I still got the chance to draw I did a study of a '39 Willys two-door sedan kustom, the one with the shark-nose and wacky headlights. It had the rearend narrowed to within the frame width, and large skirts covering the fender recesses in the body flush, so the shape of the rear fenders disappeared entirely. I called it "Three Slugs Slithering in Close Formation". Unfortunately I don't have the drawing handy.

Much the same might go for a shark-nose Graham, though the shape is really a bit different.

Another drawing I can't put my hand on right now depicted a kustom forward-control pick-up truck based on a Bedford TK. That was called the Baby Whale, because that was what it ended up looking like.

The "fat cigar" Packards, yes. I could also see myself tackling a '55-'56, if one could lower it yet keeping the Torsion-Level operative.

Nashes, yes. The '49-'50 calls for the Treatment; the '55-'56 is also appealingly weird but I'd approach it differently.

Larger Ramblers, '56-'61. Now that was ugly. Towards the end they started looking like Japanese taxis of a decade later.

Most of all, a '39 Buick with projector-lens headlights in tiny little nacelles, so that it looks even more like a dead fish. Those Buicks have been "done", e.g.

but I'd be inclined to emphasize the hit-behind-the-ear-with-a-stuffed-eelskin facial expression more.

  21. I think the problem with a '41-ish Willys custom at least in the minds of folks in general is the same as a '53 Sutdebaker Gasser. We all have edeveloped the idea that for instance the Stude is a land speed car and a 41-sih Willys is a gasser.

The shape of the Willys would actually lend itself real well to being a custom as has been noted in the concept drawings.

'49 Kaiser, I've seen pictures of one that was a 4 door built into a 2 door custom real nice, but to look at the '49 kaiser you would say not on this green earth.

I did this photoshopped one back in '99 or so. Back then, it was hard to find good pics of willys coupes, so I had to start out with a small pixelated one. I think this car was a 38, and I added 39 headlights. I might redo this one sometime. Guessimated chop of 5" front and 7" back, with the roof moved forward to match A pillars.

That was exactly my point. Something is now considered "Real" simply because ten percent of it remains? Where do we draw the line? At some certain percentage to be determined? And who is to determine it?

  28. Word on the conspiracy vine is Tucker was shoved by the big 3, yes?. A crass indignity would be a front motor, Big 3 powered Tucker.

Happy Hoppy- Gee, that Peterson Willys is so fine.
Rick- impressive award stash. I LOVE AIRFLOWS!!
