Here's that post you reference #21933

Yeah, I remember both him and the Lassie show but the plots were often too dramatic and scary for a little kid. Good catch on the photo.
Here he is all grown up.

Now, Timmy Rettig also played the role in Lassie as well.
Not sure but I think this particular Lassie was on first, maybe 1955?

  10. Tommy Rettig was Jeff Miller on the first series called "Jeff's Collie" I think it debuted in '54 or '55 and he was replaced by Timmy Martin (Provost) and the rest of the Martin family in about '57. If I remember correctly, Jeff's dad had been KIA in either WWII or Korea. He lived on the Wisconsin farm with his mom and grandad. And of course - Lassie. . .

Rettig passed away about 15 years ago, not sure just when. Remember he also played the little boy with Robert Mitchum and Marilyn Monroe in the movie "River of No Return" from about 1954.

Since it’s relatively warm here, as in the 40’s, thoughts of summer are starting to creep in, so…

The original series was also called "Lassie". "Jeff's Collie" is a rename that was done for rerun syndication. It ran 54-56. The actor who played "Gramps" in the original series George Cleveland died in '57. He had a cool '40-1 Ford pickup in the show as I recall. The entire show and setting was re-cast in '57. I personally no longer liked the show after that.

I think I remember some quite successful "Lassie" movies in the '40s, including "Lassie Come Home" Roddy MacDowell??).

Later in the '50s, Timmy's (John Provost's) mom was played by June Lockhart, a third-generation actor herself. She went on to be the mom figure in "Lost in Space," and actress Anne Lockhart ("Battlestar Gallactica," et.al.) carried the family tradition into a fourth generation. Anne has two children, as well, SO, maybe a fifth generation???

  17. I stand corrected. And in the pilot for the post-Miller family, wasn't Cloris Leachman Timmie's mom, but replaced by June Lockhart in the series? I can't remember who his dad was in the pilot.

It got pretty mushy after Jeff and Porky left the show. Seems like we had to pick between 'Lassie' & 'Dennis the Menace', or 'Disney's World of Color' back in those days!? - they were both on Sunday night.

  18. Daddy, mommy said you need to stop and pick up some Trojans. Daddy, do the Trojans have any kids our age?

man... I remember how bad the smog was... I lived in upland (east of LA)1953-1969 and a lot of days it hurt to take a normal breath of air... a lot of the time I couldn't see the mountains or even the foothills... I guess some of the 'smog laws' did some good.
