Ok... So since I've had my motor up and running, everthing ran smooth. I was running a fuel cell and electric fuel pump. I had the pump mounted in the trunk and the fuel line was already run through a hole in the spare wheel well.

I recently cut out my trunk pan and put in a mustang tank and while I was at it I put a mechanical fuel pump back on and took off the electric one. Reason being, I didn't want to run fuel line in to the trunk and back out since I just have a cheap electric fuel pump and didnt want to run the risk of damaging it by mounting it under the car.

Since then, it seems like I'm not getting enough pressure to the carbs ( I'm running two 2bbl's from Langdon's Stovebolt). It drives fine around town on straight flat roads, but it does not like the hills. I popped the hood and it doesnt even keep the fuel filter (brand new by the way) half full at idle.

Does anyone make/sell a high pressure mechanical pump for these motors or am I just gonna have to mount the electric pump in the trunk again?

What pumps are you guys running?

Sorry for the long winded setup description.

    Thanks,

    Josh

This has been a great thread. Need some info on a future project. Have a 292 Chevy inline out of a boat. Always see mention of guys running a Marine Cam!! Whats with this cam? Wondering if I should plan on using it. What should I look for to ID it.This 292 is going into my 48 Chevy 1 1/2 ton truck. It will be used as a short distance hauler fo my antique John Deere tractor. For now,I want to run the original granny 4 speed. What bellhousing, flywheel, clutch combo do I need to use??? What motor mounts do I use, or do I have to fabricate some?? Also I need some head casting numbers for a head to use. I have a few heads and engines with this deal. I always get confused with what engine family this 292 is in with. I already have acquired a Clfford 4 bbl intake with a Holley 4 bbl, tube headers and another engine with a HEI distributor. Since this engine was changed out, I only got the short block, so I need to gather up the other parts. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Hay ROOSTER, I'm in your neighborhood if you got any usefull info. Thanks guys.

  8. Careful..................some "marine" cams ran backwards. If two motors were used one was RH and the other LH.

I'm no expert, but I'll try to answer some of your questions.

What was the granny 4 speed bolted up to before? The 292 has the same bolt pattern as the 194/230/250 engines, as well as the Chevy V8s.

If you don't want to fab your own motor mounts, these might be what you need: Motor Mount Kit

292 is part of the 194/230/250 family. Most all of the bolt on stuff is interchangable - heads, intakes, headers, distributor, etc.

63 Chevy II The granny 4 speed is the stock tranny in 1948, hooked up to the 216-219 6 cyl. I get the engine size mixed up. Old age. CRS!!! Motor mount kit pretty pricey. but gives me an idea what I am in for. Need to get more info on the eng. to tranny subject. I may have a line on a later 4 speed. I have read in other posts that I MIGHT BE ABLE TO use a stock mount on one side and fab the other. Don't know. Thanks for the engine sizes, now all I need is info how to distinquish one from the other. Thanks again

later 4 spd will be much easier to hook up. i know there are pricey adapter kits to hook up early engine to later trans, but don't know of the opposite.

292 has tall side covers and passenger side mount is further forward than drivers side. 194-230-250 look the same from the outside. i need to look up casting numbers to distinguish them.

Dumb question: Anyone have or know where I can get a dip stick for a 68 230 besides a junk yard? Mine has one but it looks like the end was broke/cut off. There are no markings on it to indicate low or full.

You can get everything you need from Stovebolt. Just take a look....

Starting in '48, the trucks started to use the "typical" Chevy bolt pattern on their transmissions. Assuming that's the case with the 1 1/2 ton truck, then you should be able to use a V8 or '63-up L6 bellhousing with the wide pattern and 4 11/16" center hole. You should also be able to reuse the '48 clutch fork and all of your linkage, but you may need a different throwout bearing depending on length.

I would pull the '48 apart and verify the size of the bearing retainer and bolt pattern. Then I would test fit the trans, bell, clutch, flywheel, starter & engine together before installing into the truck, mainly to make sure the throwout bearing is going to be the right length.

As for using a newer trans, make sure its going to work with the driveline that's in the '48, otherwise you may be changing all of that as well....

Mine for the most part is all stock, no cracks are visible, but i don't have the loot to score different heads. Anyone have 194 heads, they'd trade for some c10 parts? i got a radiator(used), motor mounts, clutch, 210 column shifter, 210 rear end.

What engine rebuild kit is best to use? what cam? or does it not matter they are all the same? My 250 i picked up will be going in a 54 chevy 2dr. I just want to be able to cruise at 75mph down the freeway with no problem with a t5 behind it and s10 4wd rear end.

I understand PAW has some pretty good rebuild kits. Also check with your local parts houses. As for cams every cam company has cams for our L6s and many will also do a custom grind if thats what you want.

Crap, This may be one of the only pics I have of the 250 in my truck. Fenders off for repaint, not style.
