Sincere THANKS, guys! I should have said that my dad recalled coal by one horse and a wagon as late as 1939. YES! In the '50s when my dad made less that 100 bucks a week, sometimes, he'd take a feed sack or two and buy enough coal to get us by until times got better. I always liked the way the smoke smelled, regardless of what the greens say. Much of the coal used in Ohio and points northeast was low-sulphur Anthracite (hard) coal from West Virginia and those beds, so it had some pleasing qualities. We heated with coal all through the 1960s, as a matter of fact. Yeah, the discussion brings back memories!

We in Detroit probably contributed more to the LA smog than we had to experience but we did have some as in this picture from the mid 60's.

The weedy lot is now the Telephone Company Parking Deck and the equipment just past it is clearing out some old building to make way for the Phone Co's New HQ Bldg.

Tires are white in their raw state. The black color is added.

That was Chevy's experimental Corvair. That was 55' I think, might have been 54'. I know that in 53' when they released the Corvette, they had such good reviews they made all sorts of cars from the body and chassis from it. The Nomad was even going to look like the corvette.

No, not exactly. The original idea was to bring out an entire separate line with styling similar to the 53-5 Corvette which would include the Corvette, Corvair, and Nomad. These additional show cars were introduced in early '54.
However, the 53-55 Corvettes sold very poorly and even the V8 in the '55's didn't help. The Corvair/Nomad idea was dropped. GM was ready to drop the Corvette, but with Ford introducing the T-Bird for '55, they didn't want to lose face. Only a few hundred Corvettes were sold in '54 and '55. The 55 T-Bird sold something like 20,000. Hence, the new, better looking '56 Vette was commissioned and Duntov joined shortly thereafter and the legend took off.:)

I don't know anything about tyre making, but according to the book The Fabulous 50's, published by Krause in 1992. White walls were in short supply due to government material restrictions

Obviously, to own such a grand automobile was a recordable moment.
