Here's a little back story first:

When my wife and I were dating she said "Grandma has an old car in her garage.." Of course my interest was peaked! All the family gatherings grandma and I would be found chatting about old cars, (I just love her stories!) If I couldn't be found in the house, I was in the garage with the Model A. I always told grandma I wanted to take her out for a rootbeer float in her car. Well, it looks like I'll finally get that chance.

She told me last weekend "You can have the Model A whenever you can park it in your garage." That's all the invitation I needed!! :D:eek:

Today my wife and I went to pick up the car. This is the first time it's seen daylight since 1977.
The A was a mail delivery car in Tennessee, and made it's way to CA in the 40's. My wifes grandmother and grandfather purchased the car in 1951. As their family grew the coupe was their only means of transportation. There are fond memories of two adults and 4 children piled in this coupe headed to Yosemite for a camping trip! My father in law said his favorite place to ride was the package tray
The paint was done by the local high school shop class sometime in the 60's. I don't know whose idea it was to paint it purple, but it's kinda growing on me!
Here are some pics of the day, getting her dug out of the garage, off the blocks and out into the sun. The AAA driver said "MAN, it's about time I get a REAL car on the back of my truck!" Grandma was emotional, (As Grandpa passed 5 years ago and the car was a big part of their lives) Enjoy the pics, plans are fix the roof, new interior, mildly hop up the banger and ENJOY! Oh, and of course take Grandma for that root beer float!

Thank your grandmother for saving a piece of classic tin and take her out to dinner one night, she deserves it !
Good luck with your build and hope to one day see pictures on "THE HAMB" of it cruisin, maybe even with grandma riding shotgun !

  8. that's great!! Keep it in the family. My great grandma had an early 50's 2 door desoto in the garage. When I was young I'd just go in the garage to check it out, I remember at a young age thinking how cherry the car was and how cool it'd be to get it running. It quite running one day, so it just sat there. I mentioned interest but no one took me serious b/c I was young, she sold it to "some hot rodder" I wonder what happened to it.

  13. Very nice looking car! Like the others said, post some pictures with it washed up and grandma with the rootbeer float!

Your plans sound good for the car too.

  14. Cool story. Why was it parked? Is the engine free and have you tried cranking it over yet? Make grandma proud. I bet those memories will come flooding back for her with that ride for a float.

  15. Good stuff, glad to see that its stayed in the family. Your 33 plymouth looks like its coming along nicely. Keep up the good work

That is a great story. You don't need a left nut do you? Because I would give it up for that. I hope you keep the body stock.

Hey! Very, very cool! Nothing like family, I always say. She is a sweetheart, and it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. And btw, do NOT do anything to the A that will cause you more back problems! Good luck with it! GA

Thats a cool story. I always found myself sitting on the floor as a kid talking about old cars with my gandpa. He told some humdingers (another old school word ) loved every bit of it. Good times...Keep the pics comeing... Did you get it fired up?
