  1. I'm liking the way that roof flows. I can see a smaller more rounded rear window working with that roof line.

Yes and I just found out that my so called Merc glass is in fact a 52 Ford Delivery glass!!! Trying to find a supplier for the glass now.I can make it work but no good building a frame around a glass that I can`t get. Having one glass is not enough. you never know what might happen.

I am sure the glass is the same as the other sedans ...also the only thing that would be different would be the height of the glass , not the bottom shape . You are chopping the glass also . I assume you would be chopping the top part off the glass anyways .

I hoping it is the same but it only says it is for a delivery on the window sticker. The bottom is different this is why the two cut were there. i need to lower both corners to make it work. also it get wider as it go up the side.

I not too concerned about the fit just that I would like to know what is available in case I brake this glass when cutting it or if it brakes down the road. Nice to have a back up plan

Fitz---If this is the windshield Milt ordered through Apple Auto Glass it should be the right one for 52 Merc 2 dr ht .I remembering him saying Apple looked long and hard before finding the correct one in some small town in Ontario.

Roy I don`t know if it is the glass Milt ordered,It has Ford delivery sticker on the glass and it don`t fit the frame perfectly. There is no sign on where the glass came from on the box.

Figure it out!! There was a number on the tag so did some searching and found that a 52 merc hard top took a DW245 glass while the 2 door sedans and wagons take a DW244 glass. which is the number on the glass I have. Nothing said about delivery. Why would they do that?? There was many more sedans and wagons around why didn`t the glass just say sedan!!!

Roy Taking the day off. was at the Merc last night till 10. my Back is shot today. rest time!!

Well here is last night progress. Seems I never added enough fiberglass to the mold.I found it a bit too thin. So I added some more glass and added some rope to the mix to make it more rigid. I also have the firewall back in it with clearance now for the GM dist. Need to pull the motor now and weld everything up.Did a test fit on the glass mold and I need to change the lower corners. Seems the sedan glass is different here, also the post seems to turn inward as it go up the side. Now that I know what the glass is the next step is to build a frame. Oh I need to do a lot of work to make the 80`s chevy truck frame work. anyhow how much should I cut off the glass mold?? hmmmmm!!

Fitz...I wonder did the guys who put the other roof on it (since sliced off again) bend the posts inward to get better alignment?
Can you put the vent windows in the doors to check how they fit to the pillars?

God know what was done to the post on this car. There is a lot of adjustment on the vent windows in and out so I`m not worried there. I will be bending them outward to fix the problem.

Been working on the upper windshield frame off and on for the last few day still at it but I had to move the car the other day to make room for another job in the shop.I now have the front glass size figure out and had to place the roof back on for some pictures from a different angle. I figure I would see something that would turn me off but no way this thing still looks good from all angles. fit the seat for a test run and figure I would have to raise the roof, no my big long body fits in there good. Have about 4 inch of head room.I am itching now to get at this roof.

Well Mocked the front frame together and cut the roof up for mock up. Played around with different heights in the back and found this to be the best flow to the roof. Lots of head room.!!We rolled it out by the door for a better look and I did a quick photochop of the roof line. Having trouble deciding on what way to flow the rear window but the way I have it done here seems to grow on me. Going out to the shop today for some time at the car. Plan on seeing if I can get the front window frame finished.

It was a long day!! I had it in my head to get the front window frame all welded up and cleaned up.Well 10 hours later I have it done. First i had to fit the glass and cut the frame to fit the glass. Both lower corner had to be chopped out and completely made from scratch. Tool some time but worked my way around the frame cutting bending welding as I went.I mounted nuts on the frame and gaped the bottom and sides with 1/4 plate. Did this to set the glass at the right height and to have a 1/4 gap around the frame as I built it. Plan is to flush mount the glass and mount it in urethane.

Where the glass is going to be mounted with urethane the lip the glass sits on is too small for this. These frames were setup for use with a rubber seal. With this i had to make the frame wider. never got crazy here making each piece just so. I welded pieces of 16 gage on the edge and cut then to size after. After all this was welded it was time to clean it all up. Was not looking forward to that but before long it was all cleaned up. Now need to move on to the sides of the roof and role the top of the frame to the roof.

While I was at that Jason Had some spare time from his Model A project to lend me a hand. The Pontiac Roof was off a post car and where I am making the merc a hard top there was some work needed to be done to the sides of the roof before I mount them. There is a second edge on the lower side of the drip rail that had to be cut off. Jason cleaned this up for me. This will be the next job to cap these in.

Steve you could be right about that. Seems when I build something I tend to try to build it in my head first and this always works but ever now and again I get stumped on something. this frame was one of those projects. Nice to have it completed and now I can move on to the rest of the roof.

Time for another update. Day started out ruff. Before welding the roof on the car i figure i fit the door gaps. Well Passenger side was a joke. Seems when the roof was chopped off of it the cowl dropped. Door bottom gap and rear gap don`t line up. You get one and the other will be off. I seen this before so it was not new to me. All I did was set the door up so that the gap on quarter was the same from top to bottom. never mind the rocker gap. When this was done I found the door overlapped on the rocker by the quarter and there was a nice gap at the leading edge of the door by the fender. also the door was dropped about 3/8 of a inch on the back. I let the front body mount go only to find out that it had been crushed at some time!! Then I just jacked up the rocker in front by the door post. As you did this the rear of the door would rise and a gap appeared on the rocker by the quarter. Did this to the passenger door and shimmed up the mount and the door was fixed. But the drivers door!!! no way. spent 4 hours this morning chasing the alignment. Seems someone had problem here and ended up with a half inch gap on the door to the quarter at the top and a 1/4 inch gap at the bottom. Had to grind a bunch of filler out of here to see the problems. But after moving the door around for 4 hours I got it. Was a little pissed cause it took so long. Did not want anything to move on that door so I welded it shut till the roof is done!!lol. So after all this this is what I ended up with!!

Now that that was done it was on to the roof. Finshed off the lips on the lower side of the roof sections and then set up the passenger side and welding it in place. Now I needed to figure out what I wanted for a rear side window. I ended up cutting about 8 inch off the end of the drip rail and making a round section for the end of the window from some 16 gage. The idea I photo chopped was not doing it for me and I was seeing the look of a 70`s car. But having the window like this it reminds me of the earlier mercs. I then cut and trimed the drip rail to flow with the turn of the window. I placed tape on it to get a better look at the lines.

Now If you didn`t already know by now i a bit of a pack rat when it comes to sheet metal shapes.I tend to hold on to anything that I think can be used in a custom build.Well One of those pieces was a roof section off a 58 Chevy truck that I had in my stashed of sheet metal shapes. I cut the front section from it and with very little trimming it fit the front window and was just the right size. So now I have another year rig into the roof. That is 4 different cars and trucks at this point. I was hoping to have the roof skin welded on but the door problem put me behind this morning so I will be at it again tomorrow to try and get it all welded on.I had to mock everything together. There is a flt spot in the cent of the roof that I need to work out.I think by changing the curve of the center cross member I should get it.But other then that everything looks workable.

Maybe you mentioned it and I missed it, but what windshield are you using in here? The shape of the roof looks great, I'd say if you can make glass fit the car you'll have a winner for sure.
