Projects 1959 Chevrolet Apache 3100 - Build Thread.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by SanDiegoJoe, Jan 28, 2010.

  1. I ran those exact tires. You'll hear some negative thoughts but understand they are a fine tire. I put 30,000 on mine, been all over the country and driven through some nasty weather. I never had the front end aligned after I wacked 2 wraps off my coils and drove the poor Plymouth hard, very hard.

In the beginning they tracked very well but at about 28,000 they started to wander a bit.

What I'm trying to say is that you will be pleased.

BTW....I totally dig the shit out of your truck!

They drive pretty damn good, I hope they last me 30,000 miles!

    Small, attainable goals.

Of course, Now the right turn signal blinker light doesn't light. The blinker works, but I'm be gonna spending alot of time going around the world to right.

Yesterday I stopped by the shop of my friend that re-built my carb (sorry Turd, I didn't tackle that one on my own. Your tech article still rocks). There were still some issues with the 1BBL that makes it only run nicely with the choke a little out.

I asked him about swapping to an electric choke. It requires a different carb, and he had one on the shelf!

So for the price of a re-build kit, he is going to hook me up with a rebuilt 1bbl with the electric choke. I'll have to install it myself, but he is going to tune it for me.

I still think that Carburetor is a French work that roughly translates to "Joe, don't fuck with it."

The hole in the dash that is left from the manual choke is going to get filled with the extra headlight switch that I have. I'll use it to switch the amp for my MP3 player.

I saw your truck in that other '57 thread. Looking good! Glad you're getting your carb sorted. If you're keeping the old one, you should try and rebuild it anyway. You'll have a backup piece.

The carb is going to the rebuilder. I think I have a spare, though. It is always nice to have a backup piece on the side.

Not much has changed on my pickup... except a trip on a tow truck 'cause my engine seized.

Most likely my fault, I used an oil filter that got wet last time I changed the oil.

Nothing like turning a $14 part into a $1400 repair.

Oh well. I'll have it back in 3 weeks, the head had been rebuilt, I guess the bottom of the 235 was jealous.

Joe, sorry about the engine! Even though the circumstances suck, look at the bright side. You'll have a nice new, fresh, clean, reliable engine! Time to paint under the hood while its out!!! :D

I'm not sure actually - it's just the only thing I can think of that I did wrong! There is no way to vent the gasses on my block, the vent tube was capped with a freeze plug, so maybe that mixed with the steam from the water caused it to seize. I do know that it was not the pistons - must have been the crank.

I scored a complete 235 from a buddy for $80 that will be a good rebuilder. I decided not to spend the $$ on the old one to find out what actually went wrong.

Yeah, Terd & shooter, I am looking at that as being a plus. I had a shot at another 235 that I could slide on the total rebuild on but let it pass (not worth saving $400 of so and still having just a "fresh" engine).

    Joe,

Too late now, but you could always drill that freeze plug and put a rubber grommet in it with a pcv valve. Have it vent to the atmosphere like a road draft tube or run a vacuum line back to the intake or carb.

    Your truck looks great.

Are those L78's the 4" wide whites? I see they are the coker classics. How do you like them? They look awesome. How's it drive? I'm about to pull the trigger on these same tires. Do you have anymore photos with the new tires?

    Thanks,

    Chad

    Thanks man.

They are the 3" wide whites, and they drive EXCELLENT. The pickup is off the road right now.. the engine seized and it's getting the rebuilt 235 installed as I type.

The chucks are still running nicely, too btw.

    More pix soon!

Sorry to hear about the truck... I think I have decided on the L78's... Now I can't decide on 3" or 4".... Do you think the 4" wide whites will be too wide white? Is that possible?

BTW... Like the Chucks... I got a set of PF Flyers myself.

    Joe,

It looks like you are running the stock wheels. I assume you don't have any issues rubbing on the steering arm? I was looking last night and thought it might be a little close. Any feedback on clearance?

    Thanks!

    Joe,

Thanks for the tire recommendation. I went with the 4" L78's. It does rub a bit at full lock to the right, I'll make a limiter for it, but I'm loving the look. I still need to get a dropped axle too!

I just got the wheels back from the powdercoater and everything mounted up. I still need to find a bullet cap to fit the stock wheels.
