I found out at the WOW show that Porkys has been sold to developers. It sounds like the same people that own the retirement center behind it. It's gonna be bulldozed and replaced with more of the same it sounds like. This isn't a rumor, it's a done deal. Nora's kids didn't want it so it sold.

Never stopped to eat, drove buy a time or two. Guess I won't stop for a burger next time I get in the area.

    Too bad it will close.

Heard it at the show from someone who knows. I won't doubt him. He said Nora's kids didn't want it and sold. With the light rail going in it was doomed anyways.

  8. Hope someone saves all the neon signs.

There is another one in NE Minneapolis on Central. Not much room for parking or cruising but the food is the same

That one closed awhile ago i believe. Owned by the same people. What sets all this in concrete for me is they used to have a website and it's not there anymore.

What about "new" Porky's on the west end of Lake Street and "old" Porky's (later "Nora's") on east Lake street? I have been out of the area for a long time now, but I suppose they are long gone now. Great memories; my older brother and I convinced our dad that he really needed the J-2 option on the '58 Olds Super 88 he bought new. We'd go to "new" Porky's on West Lake Street with it when the old man was in town (he was a "traveling salesman" back in the day). It was a hideous purple 4 Door and we got a lot of "daddy's car" shit, but we won a lot of stoplight to stoplight drags back then.:D

I just ate there tonight with my girlfriend. That sucks, great burgers and onion rings. Gonna miss not being able to have a decent burger joint just down the road.

  19. Just the first closing with many more to come from the train to nowhere.

Gonna miss the best onion rings in this world.
I know what I'm having for lunch tomorrow.

That is sad news. I'm glad I was able to go there when I was up for the BTT50's last summer. Couldn't wait to get an order of onion rings.

What happened to the MSRA committee that was filing a petition to stop the sale? I think they were trying to get the restaurant on the list of historic places or something.

Joe Soucheray wrote in his column today that he heard Porky's was vowing to stay open.
But lamented that Friday night cruisers would be met with an Avenue that no longer welcomes their cars.
"It will be something to see the cars from the 1950's all polished and primped, having to give way to to an avenue that wishes nothing to do with them."

  28. Got a link to the Soucheray story?

We lost the Porky's here in Des Moines not long ago to "progress". It's a shame, but unfortunately history doesn't pay the bills. All the more reason to support your local car friendly hangouts.

I hate to see old dairy bars like that go by the wayside, and especially ones that are good car hangouts! I hate "progress."
