For what it's worth, I'm using a 350 SBC in my 46 Olds sedanette fitted with 6x2 crossram and faux 97's (Hidden EFI). It has Fauxsmobile rocker covers, Fenton headers and a powergen alternator. I'm running a T700 with OEM hydramatic column and WANT to maintain a traditional / OEM look. I've had all the garnish molds and dash rewoodgrained and will be trimming the interior in OEM broadwool. The stock body will be painted in OEM colours as well. Add some steel wheels and a true sleeper.

Like my 35 I don't mind a few modern trade offs and whilst not 100% pure traditional, I intend to drive the doors of it whenever possible. It will get up and go as well as being economical. Ozzie gas prices are twice what you guys pay at the pump.

Forgot to mention, I sold the TPI from the 350 (Corvette).

Can you feel the love in here I can :) See it is a good thing that I belong to a lot of sites. This way when things start getting nasty I can keep a cool head. No I do understand that a 4.6 would not garner love in this crowd (now) I was asking as a lot of hot rods I see are really going with late model EFI engines. I asked the question as I wanted to know as an opinion what most felt a traditional rod should run.

"an all original F100 that looks to be a survivor"

Yep I have papers going back to when it was purchased new until 1985 when it was parked in the barn I towed it out of.

"Also, your choice in motor should really stem from what you're going to need/want the truck to do. "

This is the part of the build I wrestle with the most. As it is a survivor I really want to hop this thing up. I have plans to do a rodz black paint and dark blue rodz paint scallops on the exterior. The interior I am looking into some type of black tuck and roll maybe. The engine is the area that is the issue. I have the 4.6 I know how to use and work on it as I have owned a number of Roush Mustangs and raced them but... That 390 BB really would sound mean as hell. Especially in a 53 truck.

Lastly as odd as this sounds I have NO idea how to work on a carburetor. EFI for me is easy...plug in laptop to ODBII port download and modify settings. On a carb systems there are floats, bowls and the choke OH MY. Then there is the issues of if I don't drive it will the carb gum up and get all crappy and not start. I guess I am saying I want to do the 390 but have some reservations. Plus if I do a 390 I need to sell the 4.6 to fund it.

Oh and really thanks for ALL the input. Nasty, sarcastic or not. I have a better idea how to ask and what to ask here from here on out!!!!

  4. A land mine to be sure, you stepped on it by asking for opinions at this place. It is rife with grumpy traditionalists, and good for them. This is a site created for traditional stuff.Feel free to push the boundaries, but don`t get upset when an old dog bites your ass.

There are plenty of HAMB cars with non trad engines - just don't ask technical questions about the engine. How many of you have you seen a traditional looking car that is really cool and not had a clue that a late model engine lurks under the hood? At the risk of getting flamed, I think late model motors are great for driveability and reliability and after years of trad engines, today I would certainly think about installing one in a new build, but then I am old and reliability and ease of use is more important now than it used to be.

As an example, Hupster here on the HAMB has a really cool car and it has gotten many favorable reactions - it has an LS engine under the hood. So expect a fair amount of hypocrisy as self styled diehard traditionalists ooh and aah over a car until they find out it has a late model engine and then it instantly becomes a POS to them. It really should be about the spirit of the car, not the engine....

Don't sweat the rest of this stuff, build your truck, drive the wheels off it.
