looking for information on carburetor cleaners. Looking for a good cleaner to dip my carbs in. Not the spray cans. Local dealers have a gallon can with a dipping tray. I really want the 5gal bucket type as i have about 12 ford Stromberg and Holly,s that i want to rebuild. thanks george
Unfortunately there are no good carbie cleaners anymore as the "good" chemicals in them have been regulated out. All they do now is to emitt fumes that are harmful to YOUR health. Best thing to use is a heated tank with an agitator and use a common cleaner like Dawn dishwashing soap, Castrol Superclean, Simple Green, or something similar. Believe me, it does work.
If your looking for the cleaning unit try Harbor freight, Eastwood, Summit, Jegs etc. Lots of folks have them. As far as the parts cleaner liquid , I buy mine at a tractor supply they seem to have the best price around here .
Napa still has it. http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Detail.aspx?R=MCR6406_0006414466 It isn't cheap by any means though.
I checked out what NAPA has. Not sure how well their offerings work, but they are not the chlorinated hydrocarbons that old-school carbs cleaners contained. Although there were potential health risks from those cleaners, they worked very well. They went away mostly due to environmental issues. I'm not aware of anyone who is still offering that type of cleaner today.
Haven't tried it yet, but Pine Sol Cleaner has been recommended as a soak type carb cleaner. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=560117 Dave
I'm telling you not to waste your $134 on it. You WILL be disappointed. It was great 10-12 years ago but the only thing it has going fore it now is the nasty smell and the vapor screws up your lungs. Ask me how I know.
Check out Berryman's Carb cleaner, don't have the link but you can still get it in a 1 or 5 gallon bucket. It works great!
I've been using a 5 gallon bucket of stuff called Hydroseal II I got from Napa about five years ago, it works really good.
boil em in lemon juice, i use a propane burner with a pot much like you would use to deep fry a turkey and do it outside as it does get smelly but it works great i bought gallons of lemon juice for under $10, bout 1/3 juice to 2/3 water, boil for 30 minutes and rinse. set mine up in a strainer that i dip in water, does 4 rochesters at a time, i figure it's about 6 stroms.
i got the idea from here, which does have before and after shots http://draftcycleworks.blogspot.com/2010/05/lemon-juice-party-cleanin-green-and.html camera batteries dead but i did 6 carbs including the 3 on my coupe but haven't got any after pics in the build thread yet
The absolute BEST, genuine, old time chemical, carburetor cleaner is Berrymans part #0901 (1gal), and part #0905 (5 gal). The Berrymans part #0996 (1 gal) is the "Calofornia Compliant" garbage, that works about as well as water. MANY states will only allow the California compliant ****, and as a result, I had to buy mine online (#0901) from a retailer in TX (I'm in FL). The 0901 IS the real deal...believe me...
For the ultimate, buy a large size Ultrasonic cleaner tank and use Simple green as a cleaning solution, recommend to put small parts in a baggie filled with the cleaning solution (just to keep them together and not damage the carb body) Jewelry stores and hospitials, tattoo shops all use these to sterilize. Not cheap is the down side, a large new one is $5-800 on the auction sites. But nothing gets them cleaner.
Well i bought a gal. can of Berryman carb cleaner to test. It works good but not great. I still have to do cleaning to get at the little spaces. I think i,'m just spoiled from the cleaners we used in the 60's and 70's As far as spray cleaners i still like Cyclo the best. Just can't get it in a 5gal can around here, can't get Berryman in a 5gal can ether. I'm going to try the hot tank next. Thanks to all the gave me their thoughts on cleaners. George
We can't get the 0901 near me so i tried the ****ty one I went back to using cyclo to get the p***ages clean. I'll just use this stuff for degreasing small parts. Like i said i'm just spoiled. I wish i had bought some of the good stuff and put it away for times like right now.
