History Drag cars in motion.......picture thread.

Where I got this pic the caption said,for what it's worth,that this 66 Chevelle was rumored to be the first all fiberglass funny.Don't know about that but I guess there is a 50-50 shot.

 

Pretty sure this has been posted before but it's cool.

 

This might be too new.That looks like an Arfons car with the wheels dangling but have no idea about the yellow car or the time frame.Anyone know?

Yep,thats what I thought.Maybe someone here knows.Just a small caption on this pic and nothing else.

i know maynard rupps chevoom debuted in march of 66 the matchmaker might have been in dec of 65 jan 66 44yrs is a long time and crs is kickin in

 

i saw the chevoom at lions in march of 1966 and it was suffering from new car blues now that i think of it it was an all steel car with stretched wheelbase it was at the east west meet i worked the time slip booth for c.j hart then i do believe the matchmaker chevelle was the first glass bodied car out there but i could be wrong because i believe pete seatons chevelle came out the same time they ran the 65 car at lions at that event jay howell was building the 66 chevelle and i believe the corvair at the same time

 

If I'm not mistaken Bruce Larson's USA-1 was the first in Dec. '65, just before the Comets.

 

for what it's worth: according to a caption in "drag racer magazine" it was bruce larson to build the first all 'glass funny car.

 

Firstly, I gotta thank all you guys for contributing to this thread - from what I've seen so far (I'm not even half way through!) it's been an awesome look into the past of our sport.

ty frock you are correct bruce larson was the first he ran his car at pomona feb 66 there was no class for the funny cars so they ran in cc/fd thankyou for jogging my memory .

Could be, that would make that car "Shockwave", not Quarterflash as i had first thought.

This made for a great picture but as they say "what goes up, must come down" and broke up the nose of the car. It was taken at Lions in 67 and we had just put the big block in. Ronnie was one of the first to install wheelie bars. When we installed the wheelie bars we set them to high"learning curve" and it did another wheel stand but Ronnie didn't want to screw up the new fiberglass and kept his foot in it. I think he was on his wheelie bars half the track. I learned alot of fiberglass work that year. GREAT PHOTO
