'63-'67 ford/mercury 427 "r" cars

Originally a 289 car now packing a stout 385 motor with a 4 speed.
Ive seen the 11 second time slip from the track.

Beautiful tribute '66 R code 'lane! From memory it seems only 60 '66 Fairlanes were built with the 427 and they were all Whimbeldon White/black interior, Fairlane 500 benchseat hardtops. Most, if not all, were sold to Ford racers who immediately prepped them for Super Stock. And many got up-dated to '67 exterior trim for the '67 season.
A local friend has a '64 Galaxie 500 R code that is the 11th '64 full size Ford built for '64. It's white with blue interior and has the transistor ignition feature. It needs restoration which he plans.

My "Best Man" had a brand new full size 62 Ford with a 390 which i believe had 405 HP. It had three duces and a column shift with overdrive. Fastest top end car I ever rode in. He had Cheater Slicks on it all the time. Both rear side windows were covered with Trophy Stickers. So what was the code on that one?

He traded it off and got a brand new 63 1/2 Fast Back with the 427, two fours and a four speed. He let me take it one time by myself.... oh gosh, what a blast.....

 

Security ran us off when we took that photo. They were cool about it though, he left us take a couple more and also checked out the car.

 

In early '62 the 390HP was still available. The 406 405/385 horse wasn't available until January '62. The early '62 390HP with tri power was rated at 401 horses and was a direct carry over from the '61 HP390 with tri power except the '62 got it's own VIN engine code of M. The '62 390HP with aluminum intake and Holley 600 was rated at 375 horses just as '61 and it had a VIN code of Q. The '60 HP352 and '61 390HP did not have unique VIN engine codes. The '60 was a Y. The '61 was a Z for both the 375/401 horse engines.

A very nice '63 "R" Fastback. I took this picture at the AACA Winter Meet in Tampa Fla. in 1990.

 

Here is a picture of my friend's W-code Cougars. They are both GTE's and 1968 models. We restored every nut and bolt on the red one. The red one sold this past January at Barrett Jackson for 165k. The black one is his sunny day driver. The black one has recieved new paint and the motor rebuilt, but interior, trim, and undercarriage is original.

Finally.....I figured it out.

 

1964 R-code wannabe, actually a real P-code X-Virginia cop car now running a Blair Patrick 485 FE, man can he make some power. Note the one off air bonnet built by an eighty year old tin knocker and me, well I handed him the tools.

 

It's not an "R" code. About 7 years ago I picked up a 66 Mercury S55. It's a Q code 345 HP, 428. Unusual for a Merc, this one has a 4-speed. Also has the disc brake option. The paint is emberglow metallic, w/ a black vinyl top and black int. I don't have any good pics and it's stashed in the corner so I can't get any.

Here is a picture I took of Floyd Garrett's '63 Galaxie Lightweight in about 1986. Even back then Floyd was one of the premier Muscle Car collectors. You can also see the Jenkins/Strickler Z-11 '63 Impala which Floyd also owned at the time. He was a guest at last year's Super Stock Reunion and at age 70 told me he was going to sell his museum and retire. Floyd is one of the nicest car guys I have known.

 

Cool pic I agree (its my 64 Galaxie!), although this is actually a 390 with baldy valve covers and tri-pwr. Just an attempt to make mine look as much like a 427 as possible before the clone and tribute thing seemed to take off.

 

Took these photos of a 63 R-code Marauder at Auburn, IN in 2008. Worth the trip just to see this car!

Most interesting 427 car i've seen was at Columbus in 1986 for sale. It was a dark green 63 Custom 4 door sedan R code and near it was a dark green plain Fairlane 4 door sedan 271hp.

 

Another R-code 64 that now resides here in Indiana. An excellent restoration to say the least.
