Something that this photo shows is the sheer volume of paper trash on the ground that was very common up until the 1970's or so. I mentioned this about 500 pages ago and pointed it out in a separate photo as well.
I vividly recall the large amount of trash thrown about in the "old days" as well as the cavalier attitude of those tossing it on the ground.
I realaize this is a car race but it was like this in most places.

This would likely be late 1940's or later. The locomotive is an ALCO RS- series, though I'm not sure exactly which model. First RS rolled in 1945;this one looks like like an RS-2 or RS-3. Livery is New York Central, though they had lines all the way to the Mississippi River.

That's a resonator guitar, also known as a Dobro.

  13. What an amazing collection of pictures! What little peeks into what life used to be like. Can I share any of these with the society for commercial archeology( a non profit organized to recognize and protect 20 century roadside achitecture etc) on Facebook? I think that community would flip over some of these...
    Thanks

Very cool, I've always had a love for DeSotos, bu my earlier comment was not that the car was a DeSoto specifically, but that it was a 42 model of one, those hide away headlights are the coolest thing, I would love to either have a 42, have the clip off of one (dad used to have a 41 Coupe) or have that part of the fender to convert my chopped Canadian variant Dodge sedan!

I see you're photobucket is going over it's limits, mine too, this site is hard on PB!
