I at the point now with my merc that I need to figure out a idea for a back gl***. The idea I have is to use a late model wind shield from a chevy pickup. It might work if I cut it down but I can`t seem to get the window to look right. Been looking for rear window shapes and can`t find a look I like Here is what I made up but it is just not doing it for me. any ideas of pics of rear widow in customs would be great.

Take a look at a Taurus station wagon back gl***.Not sure of the year, but I think back in late 80s or so they had a back gl*** I thought would look good on a custom.

The taurus gl*** is too tall for this. I also thing it will have too much of a curve. I wonder if anybody ever build a 3 piece gl*** for a custom?? Been looking at the 57 Buicks and it might be an idea

If you are wanting a wrap around style gl***, 90's Dodge vans had a rear quarter gl*** that has a shallow wrap. Think of it like a '63 'Vette split window, but with shorter sides.

Fiero windshield,, it can be cut down into a near perfect replacement for a shoebox rear winder so the shpae should be close to what you needs.

The shoebox has a bigger curve on the top then mine. Mine is almost flat, might be a 1 inch curve on the top from side to side.It curves like the shoebox does on the bottom.

I like the one you have. The shape just needs a little tweeking. It's too rectangular and needs more height and a trapazoid like shape by making the top narrower. I'm guessing on scale but I would make it 2" taller and narrow the top by 2 to 3" and see how that looks. Masking tape is cheap. I would also cover the gl*** that is not going to be used with masking paper just to get a better idea of how it'll look. Just my 2.5 cents.

Ya I am planning on filling the rear roof section in and playing around with window ideas using tape. I`ll post some when I get that done.

This is what Paul Bragg did on the Merc he built for Frank Livingston.
He used a rear window from a 1949 Chrysler.

And he used a similar shaped (not sure if its also a Chrysler unit) rear window on his own 1950 Mercury.

  11. Come on over to Ontario. I have a rear window section with gl*** and 6 inches of metal out of a 47 Chevy Fleetmaster. I have a 49 Plymouth 4 door back gl*** as well as a 53 Pontiac 4 door back gl***. Those don't have the surrounding metal. Nice size for a chop.

The Chrysler gl*** looks great that would get my vote.

look at the late 40 Chevy that rear gl*** might be a good fit. One thing to take in consideration is that having gl*** cut is time consuming an expensive usually if the gl*** breaks you are the one paying for the extra piece. And replacement down the road you want to make sure that the gl*** will be available later on if you need to replace it. We did a 51 Chevy here and i wanted to put in a 50 Hudson rear window but after a few conversations with the gl*** guy we went with a 40 ford rear gl***.

If you're thinking 3 piece-might want to look at early (50-53) Ford and chevy hard top gl***. If my bioputer is working right, both had a 3 piece rear window. Just a thought-I have 2 or 3 of em most weeks.

  14. From Rik's site (the number #1 place to research stuff like this), from the Lucky 7 Customs folder, Garcia '51 Mercury. I think you have to look at the rear gl*** from different angles, and make sure it will work for you:

All these rear gl***es are in earlier body stiles. The roofs are rounder and Mine is more flat. Too bust tonite to mock up the roof so tomorrow I`ll get something for us to go by. Keep these pictures coming I`m seeing stuff that looks right.

I like this. It flows away from the roof and don`t bring attention to the flat roof. Very interest.

Well I mocked up the rear section of the roof and played around with a roll of tape!! Here are some back window treatments I came up with. I keep coming back to the small window. Seams the way the roof flows on this now that a lot of the windows I try don`t look right. Some might just need to be raised or lowered. Anybody see any possibility??

i like the 57 olds idea...Putting small coupe/sedan windows into a hardtop that used to have a wrap around window doesn't look right to me...do you have any side profile pics of your car? from the looks of the pictures provided, it looks like a pretty heavy chop, the heavier the chop, the more the roof goes forward... have you thought about lengthening the roof to keep your quarter window size in proportion?

I like the 3 piece gl*** idea... looks awesome!

  25. That roof looks killer on there. Nice job. I'm leaning toward the 57 olds style as well, but i think it needs something else. Look at the late 50's lincoln back gl***. maybe 57. like on D'Agostino's Royal Emperor.

The car has no square points on it,the body is round everywhere. My personal opinion is don't put squared corners on it. Keep with the round flow design of the car. I would find a window and rear section roof window opening that is long and oval. I have a extra roof and window from a 49 ply that would probably work for you.Too bad we don't live closer. You could trial fit. Good luck.

Your so right. I been noticing that. Every time I make a back window design I always have to round out the gl***. Would love to have a merc stile gl*** but the upper section of the roof is too flat.

  30. How about a bullet hole?
