I had a 34 chev 5 window for sale had a guy ask for lots of pics. So I sent him 12 pics of the stuff he asked for he shows up in my drive way with a Hummer and a uhaul from two hours away then starts telling me its not in restorable condition. I asked him if he read the ad as it stated great for hot rod but needs lots of work. Then ask if he looked at all the pics HE REQUESTED. He agreed that I described it honestly and gave him the pics he wanted but wanted me to eat the cost of his gas trailer rental and time to drive the 4 hours to and from home. I then told him the high way back home was just down the drive way to bad you waisted your time and walked into the garage and closed the door behind me.

Sold this 1 @ auction last year.
After the hammer dropped the new owner finds me and asked me "Who built it?"
    I said "I did"
He then proceeds to ask me to take it back to my shop and change the wheels, tires, exhaust, and valve covers, and he'd pay what ever.
So 2 weeks later I deliver it to him (100 miles away) and hand him a bill for (Big $$$$) hey pays and we're both happy.
And I got$5 grand worth of parts to boot.
    Gotta love it.:D

I wonder if I'm one of those ***hole buyers people complain about??

called on a 1990's pickup yesterday. practically had to beg the guy to tell me anything about it.

    ME: what motor?
    HIM: "4 cylinder".

    ME: which transmission?
    HIM: "I don't know"

ME: you don't know what transmission your truck has?
    HIM: "no"

ME: is there anyone in the house who does know?
HIM: "I don't think I want to sell this truck to you sir" ... then he hung up.

maybe I should have asked if it was a 5 speed or automatic... or maybe he should have listed that information in the ad so I don't have to waste my time calling 4 cylinder/automatic trucks when that is not what I want.

called on another truck and the guy didn't know if it had AC or not.

buying and selling cars is a pain in the ***.

My dad and I were selling a 58 ford 2 door wagon. Clearly pictured in the ad with a new paintjob, original (rough) interior, motor and trans done. it was an unfinished project, with many of the big things done. A guy in Corona Del Mar calls us, loves the car, sees our asking price and offers to trade his 88 corvette with all kinds of goodies on it. So we drive 100 miles to meet this guy at his house, looks the wagon over, doesn't want to test drive it, and proceeds to tell us about his corvette. Dyno'ed 383, all smog legal, all stainless hardware in the entire car, low mileage, aftermarket brakes. Like we came to buy his car, and then proceeded to tell us he would have to have some money on top of our car. "well, we aren't in the market for a corvette, thanks anyways." Only reason we considered it was because he offered to trade his finished car STRAIGHT UP for our 58 wagon. Oh well, some people think they can corner you into any deal...

I used to build custom bikes, the last one I had for sale was an old chopped 750 Honda. Nice bike and safe, this guy drives over an hour with a rented trailer, late at night, and starts telling me that he would buy it if it were to change this and do this....I finally had enough and said" You drove all this way to just tell me you really dont want this bike, I sent you pics and we agreed on the price and I was honest about the bike." He finally stopped all the B.S. and bought it and loaded it up. He just wanted to try to beat me down on the price by talking down the bike.

I can relate--have had folks want to buy a 40 I'm building but want this changed and power windows and other stupid changes, etc, etc.--I just tell them to come back when I'm ready to sell it--it will be built to suit me--if you like it buy it, if not then go buy another one --no changes !! not even for more money.
Many times they don't haggle about the price but want to give you a partial payment to make sure they get the car--won't do that either as they THEN want changes and pester the hell out of you--again, tell them to come when the car is done and I'm ready to part with it.

  10. Thanks for that!!!!! Drag stuff out of people is like the new B.S. trend or something. You just want to ask them how the F**K did you get through life with those communication skills? You really want to blow a gasket, try dealing with people selling weapons. Not only do you have to deal with dragging info out by needle nose pliers, in the back of your mind the whole time is this monkey also has the 44 Magnum I'm trying to buy, and I still dont know yet if it's unloaded.

Patience people..if it were easy, everyone would be flipping cars.
Be direct, not wishy/washy, and control the phone call.
Whenever you sell a vehicle to Joe Public, you create the terms, not the wanna be buyer.
If wanna be buyer, doesn't like your honest, no-******** approach, that's unfortunate for him (he isn't the only potential buyer in the world).
Prepare vehicle for the sale (cleaned out, all extra parts, paperwork, etc. ready at hand).
Never, ever deliver a car to someone without it being paid for in full, and in advance.
I have sold a lot of cars, and it really doesn't have to be a pain in the ***..weed out the ********ters/wanna be's on the phone (do you really want them at your house, wasting your time?)
Price vehicle slightly on the high side (everyone wants a deal), therefore leaving some room to negotiate.

I like the guys who call on the phone and start haggling price before they have even came to look. I find it a lot more amusing than annoying though.

Had a guy tell me he wanted my 3rd member, $45. Came over, wanted to pay $40. Told me all he brought was $40. Like an idiot, I believed him. Then he takes a wad out and pulls off 2 $20s. Calls me up 3 days later, his 454 4 speed broke the 3rd member. Told him if he hadn't stiffed me for the $5 bucks, I would have given him his money back. Expensive $5 he saved.

I was approached on my 61 Belair spt cpe last year. I threw out a price and they just had to see it right away. I told them all the "bad" stuff about it and said the god will speak for itself. Fast forward to the day after they looked, I get a call from the guy's son. He says he'll take it for $2,800 more than my price if I did all the body repairs and painted it. "Seriously? Are you kiddin me?" "Yeah, why?" I told him if wasn't his dad I tell him in person to go **** himself. It wasn't for sale, I didn't want the "job" if I sold it, they approached me about it. Then to come back and offer me such an insult is beyond normal thinking. There's $3500-4000 in parts and materials for ****'s sake! So, I tell this guy, a dear and close friend of 20yrs in the loudest voice I can, NOT FOR SALE AT ANY PRICE! ***uming the body was ready for color I wouldn't paint the ****in thing for $2800. Some people have no respect for quality and talent. His ol man is one of em. ***hole...

Man, I'm glad I read this thread, got an overseas buyer formerly lived here wants to buy one of my cars. He saw a picture of it at another non-HAMB site. He wanted things done, that I'm not really willing to do to make it easier for him....sound familar. I gave him a price and made a few allowances and thats it...he is not asking for an agreement prices as he says. I did find out his problem is the price he pays it cost him almost twice for import...not my problem. I told him I will give you a ***le that what my state requires, you want a bill of sale well that could say anything. My end of the deal is my end, your is whatever you want once I see the cash. I reminded him he found me, he wants to buy, I'm not really interested in selling unless the price is right...my price. Okay now I feel better.........it obvious he doesn't realize were having a fun winter either.

There are people everywhere that advertise like that, and there are people everywhere who make offers that are too low, want you to finish the work, blah, blah blah.
Fact of the matter is that car sales/buying just go like that. Period. I've only had ONE good buyer/flawless transaction in the dozens of vehicles I've sold. Dude came out with his father in law and wife, I told him about all the problems up front. When he saw them in person he got kinda nervous (non car guy) but his father in law reminded him what he was paying for it. They drove off in it within about 10 minutes. That was after it had been posted for about 2 months, and every flake in Texas had crawled out from under their respective rocks to look at it.
In the last month I just bought another car, and traded off my Jeep. Both transactions were quick, but only happened after months of "phishing". The guy that traded for my Jeep jokingly told me that I was hard to do buisness with when he came and picked it up. I told him that it was because after a month of flakes, no shows and lowballs you kinda get worn down. Every reply that you get you feel less and less like responding to.
It's not an easy biz, and there is no one way that works in every situation. I usually keep my cars as long as possible and then buy something else before I decide to part with em. It relieves any kind of pressure and makes me in control of the situation; both buying and selling. Necessity makes things tougher. I would never post an add that says "must sell due to_____" that's just an open invitation to all the broke crazies...

I sold a ot 97 chevy truck last fall, with pictures and all on craigslist. Guy calls me and says ill take it, I'm on my way, see you in an hour. 5 hours later as I'm putting it inside before I work, he finally shows up in a cab. He walks up and says right away, "those aren't stock wheels, I want stock wheels and tires.". Not even a hello or apology for bein late first! He offered me 1500 less than I was asking because he would have to buy stock wheels and tires and put stock exhaust on. He then threw such a fit when I told him price was firm, I had to call the cops. Just as well since his cab left and he only had 20 bucks on him anyways.

When people start pointing out problems with an old car I'm selling, trying to beat me down , I tell them that I priced the car for the condition it is in and if everything was fixed/finished or in pristine condition, the price would be a LOT higher! As is/where is!

  21. I arm myself to the teeth when selling a car. Too many crazies out there. Almost got jumped one time. That was enough for me. Kid near me was killed selling a 5.0 a few years back during a test drive. Car was stolen and they found the body later.

I really thought I could make some dough buying and selling on the side, but my experience with no call/no shows and ******** artists, picture takers etc. Went through that on the last truck I sold. Guy I finally sold it to came down with cash in hand, threw it on the trailer and didn't try to talk me down. Of course I was ready to torch the vehicle by then.

Cash-in-pocket clowns do make me mad. When I list and ad for a car I am selling, I always put FIRM in the ad. It is crazy how many people still show up and do the old, I got $1000 less in my pocket.

What is even more amazing is that they always seem to have the rest in another pocket when you say no.

Ad states it's a PROJECT car. Guy calls me and asks me if he can drive it to New Mexico. I say "no, it's a project car". He then asks me if I'll fix it up to the point were he can drive it to New Mexico. I said "no thanks". Did you look at the pictures or read the lengthy description???

my pick are the e-mails you get from craigs list buyers that have not seen the car and make you a lower than asking offer.
The last two cars I had on craigs list I started to reply back with a counter offer of 1-1/2 times my asking price and it is a deal. I have not had one reply back after that.

I offered to change a muffler for a prospective buyer. It sealed the deal and he gave me my full asking price and I had the new muffler in my possession and was going to change it anyway. No one else was beating down my door at the time and the kid clearly loved the truck but had little skills or a space to do it.
An hour of my time paid off handsomely in the end.

you list a car, describe it and ask a price. if you want, you negotiate the price. if someone wants it they buy it and can do whatever they want with it, not your problem-end of story. i always put in my ad, " no tire kickers, car is sold AS IS"

Just reading this thread, can show you how tough it can be out there.

Some say ask more than you really want when selling, so you have room to haggle. They expect it .

Others get pissed if the buyer thinks like that and tries to haggle.

Some get pissed if they ask for the lowest price, before coming and others think they are stupid if they wait and travel to see it and then ask.

For a buyer or seller, it sounds like a mine field out there.

I've bought 2 deals from out of state and things went well on both. It's just a matter of talking it out and sharing information up front.

Having said all this, let me ask a question and hear your thoughts.

Here on HAMB a seller ran an ad. I PM him as HAMB suggests. Stated that I like his 55 Chevy g***er and can he provide more pictures. NO REPLY

I later send another PM and state that I got no reply, so I guess he has sold it and I'll have to keep looking. NO REPLY.

The car was in So.Cal. Where I have friends and lived years ago. So it would be local deal for me. Have a buddy down there and visit often.

After my second PM a day or 2 later, he posts it SOLD on his ad. Says he's sad that he had to sell it to someone overseas as there's no money here in the USA.
WTF? I'm a cash buyer and he can't be bothered with a reply, but has time to deal with an overseas sale??

How can he sell it on the HAMB, if he doesn't answer PM's on HAMB? Comments/thoughts? Sorry to ramble.
