Bushy (or anyone)........can you recall Joy Fair racing an Olds or Chevelle that was all primered with no markings and the #1 scripted up on the C post of the car??

I seem to remember that I think??...........or else I had a dream about that............I can't tell you over the years how many strange dreams I've had about Hberg, mostly like it was open again then I wake up and realize I'm not going there.........lol!!

Bushy.....you and I have many of the same photos.......I presume you got them from Russ Lewellen?

While I love anything about Hberg I will stay with stock cars on my end as the theme of this thread started by BigIndyJohn began it with them..

Loving your stuff you are posting though!

Notice the Jegs logo on the 7, I believe this is either Don Gregory or his car owner Bud St. Amant.........one year they brought two cars to the 250 and each drove one.......

    Look at the crowd.......

.....in those days all short tracks over the country were jammed with fans .......

.......in part because not much entertainment options were out there in the 50s 60s and 70s to compete with live entertainment....and maybe the cars and start were more individualized and unique???

So do I........he ran up to the window and was slamming away on Bennings arm with that helmet.......that was an incident that began the exit of Ed Witzberger from promoting in the future........the drivers had a strike as a result of penalities leveraged I believe on Mihalic for breaking Bennings arm but no penalities on Benning for the driving some claimed started it.........

As a result the program was cancelled and Witzberger eventually decided to hand over promoting in 73 which Collela pony uped to.........

There are some that say if this didn't happen the track might not have closed in 73 if Witzberger was still runing it........

That is all debatable but it did have an indirect impact on the tracks fate.

Its seemed if someone showed up with a new or repainted car, it had a few donut rubs or a bent something before the night was over.. I remember that pretty Monte that Gregory had.. John

Yeah like Tony Diano coming out with that wicked racked 67 Camaro that resembled a funny car and was so fast and nimble in the turns .......all shiny and new then a spin out in that dip in turn one and slam........hit by about 4 cars and all banged up........ugh!

    Joy Fair.........

For those of you who check out this thread from other parts of the United States that don't know the name Joy Fair he raced successfully for 50 yrs........

He is to the upper midwest stock car racing......as say Hershel McGriff was to the West Coast.................Bud Lusford and Red Farmer where to the South............. and Stub Fadden was to New England..........

I would argue that the top Upper Midwest stars in short track asphalt late models from the mid 60's through the early 70's were Joy Fair, Bob Sennecker, Ed Howe and Dick Trickle......not necessarly in that order...

However there was no shortage of great talent that could equal any of them any given day of the week.........(Jim Bickerstaff anyone??)

...but any short track fan of paved late models in those days knows them like a Yankee fan of the same era knows of Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford and Yoggi Berra......and no I'm not a Yankee fan!.....lol!
