Gas / Petrol Prices

  1. This is "On Topic" because we need gas to drive our rods and as long as it is reasonable we can stay in the hot rod business too. I have clients in the oil biz who say don't be surprised if we get close to $5/gal this year. The Gov gotta pay for all these deficits they created somehow. Yes I know gas taxes pay for roads too but the Feds are screwing around with everything taxable and then some with under the radar accounting to get their $$ when and where they want it. Be ready for the 80% life tax.

  2. As noted by rustyford40 the relative price of fuel in any one place is governed by taxation. Here in NZ as of today January 18 it is 199.9c/litre for 91 and 206.9c/litre for 95 and 136.9c/litre for diesel. Remember that road tax for diesel is paid separately and varies with the size of the vehicle. Currently the NZ dollar is worth about 76cUS and there are 3.8 litre in a US gallon - which makes our 91 about US$5.77.US gal.

Petrol & diesel price review 17 January 2011

Petrol prices rose 2 cents per litre on 17 January, and diesel 3c, the first rise since before Christmas. In spite of a relatively strong exchange rate – up about US2c since the last price rise on 22 December – the latest increase reflects continuing rises in the commodity price of crude oil, which has climbed US$10 a barrel since mid-December, reaching as high as US$100/barrel (it averaged around US$80/barrel through most of 2010).
Allowing for the exchange rate, the net imported cost of petrol has risen 15% since 1 December 2010, with the cost of diesel up 12%. As a result, this has lead to a 15c rise in the pump price of petrol since then, and 12c for diesel.
The last time commodity prices were this high was in late September 2008, when we were also paying $2.00 per litre for 91 octane – but taxes were 13 cents lower, although the exchange rate was worth 8 cents less. By comparison, the price of diesel, which has no fuel excise, was $1.60 a litre, due to a higher commodity price relative to petrol at that time. At current commodity prices, the imported cost of petrol makes up about 94 cents of the price of a litre of petrol – and taxes another 88 cents.
Although the latest price rise brings the importer margin (retail price less costs) back to the top of the normal range (but above average for premium petrol), AA PetrolWatch notes that the average margin during 2010 for petrol and diesel has been consistently 2c/l higher than it was 2 years ago, suggesting there is less market pressure to drop prices at current levels. Our monitoring shows the band of movement between low and high margin trigger points has narrowed, with 2c price changes occurring when previously 4-5 cent price adjustments were the norm, thereby raising the average margin.

I know that HAMB doesn't allow political talk but the oil situation is something we all should be concerned about, including HAMB because what is happening today is just a little taste of whats to come in the years ahead. The world is going to run out of oil within 20 ,30 years.

I paid $3.95 today for mid grade (89). Its $4.05 for 91 octane here in the high desert

  24. I am yet to see any hard evidence that would back this up that is not just propaganda .. Remember, there are many places on this planet that man has not set foot on, let alone test drilled.

A significant portion of my portfolio is in oil and gas. I don't care what it costs, I'm making money on it.

  27. But here in the UK Dave and Nick think that all is right with the world because none of their friends in the Billionaires Boys Club moan about the cost of petrol.........

Truthfully, the British Government loves oil price rises - 1p on a barrel of oil means several times that in tax take. When they were in opposition they banged on about a fair tax on fuel (plan for a certain level of tax revenue on fuel and don't allow rises in oil prices to distort that). Not so keen now they're in power.

  28. I don't want step outside the lines of what is acceptable to post here so if i am out of line, please delete, no hard feelings.
If the folks in power want to advance their green energy ideas (and they do) there is no better way than to let gasoline prices rise dramatically to where "green" ideas actually begin to make financial sense and that worries me. I don't know exactly what the government makes on taxing gasoline but for arguments sake lets say it's 20 cents on the dollar. On $1 gas they would make 20 cents a gallon. On $5 gas they would make $1 a gallon. Looks like a big win for them, other than some prematurely shortened political careers. We need to drill here. Now. Last time this happened in 08' the mere threat that we would allow more drilling kicked the legs out from under the $147 a barrell that oil futures were trading at. It is clearly that time again.

    Unfortunately you are nearly right.

Approx 73% of the cost of fuel in the UK is tax.

From our salary we are also taxed approx 12% supposedly to pay for the welfare state i.e. hospitals, pensions benefits etc.

The cold truth is that the UK is bankrupt and the only way out of the situation is to raise as much revenue as possible without people squealing too much.

Issue here is that the whole country has no cash so when fuel prices rise it really hits home to those that require a car to get kids to school, me to work and food from the shops. You also get the spin off that goods are more expensive as the lorrys need the fuel to get the goods to the shops so food prices etc start to go up and we have a vicious circle...

Currently paying over £500 per month in fuel as we happen to live semi rurally and that is with a car that gets about 37mpg...

Anyway, I am moving to America so I can enjoy the final hurrah of the automobile before it becomes just too expensive to drive anywhere!

i was listening to "Radio Live" at around 6.30 this morning, (local NZ radio) this guy rung up .. he said he'd just returned from the U.S. .. while there he had heard that B.P. despite their exploding oil rig had posted their biggest profit ever!!!

1/ is there any truth to that ???
2/ and if so who is who trying to kid by hiking fuel prices ????

does BP stand for "big profits?"

we could be being robbed blind by these conglomerates,, blaming fuel prices on middle east un-rest ... or just convinience..

smiles un-easily at an expensive cruise to work tomorrow... might have to disconnect a sparkplug or two to save costs
