Looking to see if anyone is running the firestone Indy tires 760-16 or the bigger ones. I would like to see some pics and possibly opinions on them. thanks
I wouldnt be surprised if there not out yet. Back when they announced the early dirt car tires they didnt become available for another year.
I think it's a '77 front. Been running the car since '80. Currently Packard powered and available for loan to qualified individuals for running on the salt this year.
Wow, here I though I was doing good at 155 in my ol' 72. That things picks them up and puts them down. How she drive at that speed?

Car runs as on rails. Full frame, tube axle. I and others take VERY good care of our tires. Cool, dark, dry room between meets and such. I don't know how many plys they are but there are plenty. Guys who have gone through the first ply are allowed to run, I am told. Other than that, no proublums have come about from using tires thet I bought in '79 and don't know how old they were then. If they were good enough for Al, they are good enough for me. If some body bowarrows the car it goes with new Dunlop tires. "Stones stay at home.
Baskerville printed a little tiny picture of my '32 Ford coup in HRM years ago with those tires and wheels on it. Now that car looked cool with 800-18s. I thought. But I can't reproduce the picture here.

i may not have been clear. I was looking for pics of cars running them. I have already seen them on coker site. I don't know of anyone running them. Also opinions? ie.... they are slick in the rain with half tread
I don't think you will find a lot of street cars running them except those who want the looks and don't care if they might not do well on the road in weather conditions except the usual bunch who trailer everywhere anyhow. They wouldn't do me much good even if I had a rig they would fit as quite often I can leave here in 70+ sunshine in the spring, hit snow on the pass and run the chance of hitting serious rain even though the weather might be great on the other side of the pass where the car event is. That is going in two out of three directions to events 150-200 miles away. They would be great for the a restored circle track car though rather than paying a premium for old tires that have may have already seen a lot of laps on a car.
In the days when they were real Indy tires they came with full tread and half tread. Mine were brand new full tread tires when I bought them in (I think) '79. I promptly ground all the rubber off to make them legal for Bonneville @ 300mph and then put them on my 160 mph car. Seemed to make sense at the time.
No problem, I received a phone call from Jess @ Coker when they came off the line & my financial's were not good at the time & I had to pass.
Rich, Just a ignorant question - why did Firestone make half tread tires for the Speedway? I always thought it was a way to keep track of tire wear during pit stops - never understood why. Thanks, Offy 220
This is just a guess but I would guess for the same reason that roundy round tires have no tread. More rubber on the track at any given time.
Thanks porknbeaner - Makes sense. When I was younger [years ago!] I thought the tires were just wore out - caused by misalignment.
