I have a 51 chevy 216 w/3sp manual trans for my 50 fleetline. Any tips on things I can do or swap out to strengthen up the motor? I have a twin turbo setup that I'm going to fab up for the motor. I don't plan on racing or running the motor way too hard. More of a cruiser. I have two t3/t4 turbos and an intercooler for it. I just want the motor to match the rest of the car (which is kinda wild with the chop and the section) and I want it to be a completely unique car.

  2. Doesn't the 216 have babbit bearings? Not necessarily a good match for turbos. If you really want to go that route, get a later 6 with insert bearings.

216 is a babbit beater, 1 turbo would destroy it, and you want 2.......you`d need at least a 235, then you could do it.....well, anything can be done, but i wouldn`t even attempt it with the 216....

Use studs on all fastners on 235

  6. ...were turbos around before 1964?

  7. x2.

If you want unique why not do a 261 or 292 with your turbos.

Btw, if you're just going to cruise, why the turbos? Why not sell them and use the money to purchase a 261 or 292 and dress it up some.

Ya. The Bean Bandits ran a rail with two turboed bangers in I think late 50's early 60's. Saw it the CHRR.

Yes sir! 1962 Olds Turbo Fire 215 V8. The turbo design is over 100 yrs old. http://www.gizmag.com/go/4848/

I would just try one t3/t4 unless you want serious power.

This is a joke, right? Were Mustang IIs and 350s around before 1964?

I totally understand what your saying. Money isn't really the concern. I was actually going to put in a caddy 472 but decided to keep the 6.
I actually just bought the turbo stuff. I've seen some done on the 292's but was just wondering the amount the 216 could be strenghtened. I guess I was just going for more of something that might haven't been done yet. I challenged myself with the chop and section of my fleetline so I thought I would try this next. I may step up to the 235 then.

It's going to be IMPOSSIBLE to make an engine under ~300 cid flow enough air to use two t3/t4 turbos and still be streetable... By the time you put enough cam in it, port the heads to flow enough to use the cam, and rev it to the moon to actually produce enough air flow to spin the turbos, your WAAAAY past the point of streetable.

A single turbo would be much more rewarding.

Con rods are lubed when that little scoop on the rod cap dips into the oil pan. It ain't just the "poured babbet" bearings. Most engine bearings are made of or are clad with babbet. Turbo+216+enough rpm to spool up=many engine parts widely ****tered. And the '63 Corvair was turbo charged, the Pinto and it's derivitive the Mustang II are best discussed else where. JMO

many things that havent been done yet
is beacuse its not a god idea to do it

  19. Is the 216 an engine with oil slingers on the rods to toss oil around instead of forced oiling system? If so, can I come over for the first (and last) boost p***?

  20. BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Yes, and I have the feeling more than the oil will be slung!

  21. LOL. He'd better be wearing a catchers mask when he boosts it:D

A perfect example of "just because you can doesn't mean you should". Might be fun to start a thread/poll about which rod will exit the block first. Winner gets the rod for a wall hanger. In case of multiple winners first posted correct number gets the rod. Runners-up gets thier choice of any of the piston chunks.

Back around 1950 a guy named Bessie something or other sold a turbo kit for the 216 Chevy. It boosted the HP to around 150 .It was packaged pretty nicley on the top of the engine. Supposedly the original half pressure half dipper oil system could tolerate it.I read about it in those old GMC-Chevy tuning books by Roger Huntington or Bill Fisher.
The first turbo supercharged aircraft engine was in the 1920's.

and if you look at my original post it said "how could I strengthen a 216." I obviously know it's a weak motor. And I said wasn't going to race it. If I want to race I have my 600hp mustang or my 27 roadster with a 383 BB Mopar. It was just a simple question

Small twins could be cool, or compound turbos would work just fine if you want to push the envelope a bit.

I would suggest the usual round of stuff, good hardware and careful machining. Maybe even a full flow oil conversion and updated rods.

Go for it and let the naysayers say nay!
