Hell, if I was going to spend $100 on gas, spending $150 wouldn't stop me. I don't think it will make as much difference as you think.

  3. taxes my friend, like england its mostly taxes- to fund the good life I guess

lets figure 15 MPG and a 300 mile round trip.

your gas bill @ $4.00 per gallon would be $80.00.

$5.00 per gallon would be $100.00.

    $20.00 bucks difference.

same trip @ 10MPG gives you a $30.00 difference between $4.00 and $5.00 per gallon.

WRONG. I will cut down on my shows, my pention is the same as 13 years ago, no SS increae in two years. When you grow up, you will find out things aren't the same as when you are young. I don't plan on parking my rod but will cut down a lot. Been doing it since the 50's.

I love hot rods, but sensible cars do have their place.

Last year I could not afford to drive the flatbed to Bonneville. I drove my little toyota there instead for 1/3 the price. On a 4,000+ mile trip, it really mattered.

If it does it will effect me for sure. As it is I only plan on going to one event this year, and there are five I would like to be able to afford to go to. I took a job this year to make ends meet, my retirement just doesn't do it anymore, which further complicates my ability to go to shows.

Its the cost of participating in this hobby, period!

You must not want to see "that show" bad enough.

I and Lowriders Art Gallery are still heading to Salina KS on a 2000 mile round trip because we had a great time last year and we want to attend that show bad enough. I will still find a way to see the shows I want.

Did the attendance drop off during the mid/late 70's gas rationing? I don't remember my dad bitching about prices when he was filling up his 1969 Eldorado for our month long trip to CA to attend a few national events. I suppose we could have taken my moms 4 cylinder wagon.

Is your point that this hobby isn't cheap?

Everything has increased, cost of chrome, cost of good paint, cost of tires, cost of tools.... some folks should take up knitting instead and stay home with their cats. Industrius people will find a way to afford what they really want, others will just complain.

Never catch me alive or dead in a Toyota either. They have always made fuel efficient AMERICAN cars you know.

With a 401 Buick in my '49 Ford coupe drinking 91 Octane in Canada currently at over $5 a gallon plus octane boost, fuel cost is a factor. Not to mention that it takes an hour in gridlock to get out of the city even on the weekends. I pick a couple of events less than 2 hours away where I take the coupe . Any more than that, I take the daily drive 4 cyl Nissan. Is it totally related to the price of fuel in MY case? No. There are just so many pathetic drivers out there, I'd rather be in a car with 4 wheel disk brakes that handles like a go cart on long trips. The 10 year old Nissan doesn't attact attention and I don't have to worry about it in the motel parking lot when I'm asleep. Call me paranoid, but when a freshly recast 4 spoke Crestliner steering wheel fetches over $2,000 you think about it when you can't lock the car on the way to a show with other car guys. (lock solonoids not installed yet)

Commonly know as "cutting off your nose to spite your face". So, this summer, I'll be hot rod shows having gotten there in my "made in America" Prius and you'll be in your hotrod in your driveway at home going "Vroom, Vroom,Vroom". Have fun.

If I'm not mistaken, the Prius is made in Japan.

They were/are building a plant in Tupelo, Mississippi to do it, but I don't think they have built any cars there yet.

Some of you guys kill me.

If you can afford the increased price on gas, good onya.

Those that can't (fixed income) shouldn't be told to pick up knitting.

The tables will turn soon enough if you keep that attitude and you'll be crying because you can't afford to go everywhere you used to.

Try walking in someone else's shoes before you go all macho, you may learn something.

BTW, spell check is your friend.

I don't have to make payments on my Hot Rod. Makes fuel seem a lot less expensive. The price hasn't bothered me yet, $9.00 a gallon might tho. I still go where I want to go when I want go. Used to have a 32' Diesel Motor Home. When someone ask how do you afford to drive to it, I just said, If I have to worry about that, then I shouldn't be going. Same applies here. Stay home and enjoy your SOAPS.

No tears here. I worked a couple short term side jobs, flipped/parted out a couple cars to get back into this hobby in 2004. I have no doubt I will want chrome in the future. Is the money as easy as it used to be? No. Will I find a way? You can bet on it.

Some people got 2? I missed the boat, I'm 44, broke and late....

All cost--Fuel-grocerys-ect will have an effect on all that's on a fixed income but we will adjust our spending and cut a few events off that's not important to us and still make the best ones and have fun any way.Usualy by reducing the weekly local event will be more than enough to be able to make the better ones and any way thats how I see it.

I don't think gas prices will affect any of the early Spring/Summer runs as people are dying to get there cars out after a too long, crummy winter. My rods get great mileage anyway, so I'll be drivin em more even for everyday errands now that the weather is nicer, when I'm not ridin my dual-sport bike...(it gets 70+ mpg.)

...time'll tell how the whole Summer season goes...
...if your in the Northern Illinois area, come to our show this June; we're giving away CASH!

There's plenty of shows in the North West, so the price of gas wont make that big of a difference. Bonneville is still on the calender, since the Bend in the Road is free, and I'll eat at the burger joints, along with road food. Or hell, I might cook over a fire at camp. I'll probably not be running back and forth to Wendover as much though.

Flipper, you're right, I stand corrected. Looks like Toyota moved Corolla production there and the Prius builds haven't started yet.

Take out the "made in America" bit and I'll still be at the shows. When you travel several 100 miles a week for work, that 45-50 mpg can make you feel better.

Really O/T, but the best milage we ever get is with 4 people in the car, A/C on and doing 70 (oops, 65) on the Interstate.

Sad that you're proud about selling out. Ask some of the members from Detroit how they feel about your Japanese can. If I HAD to drive anything like that, I wouldn't be bragging about it.

The last time I "did the right thing" and bought american I paid (and paid and paid) for it. In 125,000 miles our Ford SuperDuty needed two tranmissions, A/C overhaul and be worked on for several driveability issues.

The little toyota was bought six months after the Ford and was intended to be a throw away commuter car. It turned out to be the good one. It had 318,000 miles on it and was still running great when it got hit head on this past October. ...and I walked away.

As far as cars go, it was a great car and I will brag about it to anybody that will listen.

Wont affect any local shows or events. Will affect distant shows.I attend Carlisle twice a year. Each round trip is 2,156 miles.Hershey is a 2,210 round trip.Might cut down to one Carlisle visit.Someone pointed out how a 300 mile round trip would only add 20 dollars to the expense ledger.Thats hardly a long trip. There are days I put on 400 just cruising the state visiting friends.Start running crosscountry and see how the expenses overall add up.Carlisle is 9 days on the road with 8 nights lodging and a minimum of 18 meals.Higher costs on food, fuel, lodging do add up.

I am not selling out. First of all, if Detroit had recognized the fuel situation in the 70's and built a decent product in the 70's and 80's, "foreign" cars would never have gotten a foothold. Now, Fords are made in Mexico and Canada, the Fiesta is made in Brazi. Cadillac Escalade-made in Mexico as are Chevy trucks. Subarus-made in Indiana. Nissans-made in Tennesee. Hondas-made in Ohio. These "foreign" cars are made in the USA with USA workers. Corporate profits are another question and they ALL likely go partly overseas anymore. Ford's largest shareholders are mutual funds-can't tell who owns those. GM's largest shareholders are the US and Canadien governments-whose biggest shareholder is China. Chrysler's largest shareholder is the UAW retirement trust, followed by that great American Company,Fiat. Like it or not, this is a global economy.
So, while you're looking out for them, who is looking out for you?

FWIW, I've owned Hondas, Nissans and Subarus and never gotten less than 180K miles out of them without needing major repairs. Also, owned Fords and Chevy's and can't say the same. My hot rod's all American, and my farm tractor's a Ford, if that makes you happier.
