Yup,you're right Johnny. Sparky did swap Copeland for the 55. This is when I swapped a little 27 T roadster and my first chopped 50 Merc for the 48 Dodge. I kept it for about three or four years and Wayne and I swapped again for my49 Merc, this was when Darcy McGroarty ended up with the convertible, also when it started it's downhill slide in condition.Thankfully you found it after that Steve....Oh yeah,it was somewhere in those years that I met John Denich and ruined his life by selling him his first Chevy,ha,ha. Not all that bad having a ruined childhood,eh John. Looks like this lifestyle is suiting you just fine these days.

Alot of people confuse this car with a violet 46 Chrysler coupe that was at Holland Mich in the 90s.

Just want to ad my thoughts. Firstly sincere good luck in finding the cars history as that is the icing on the cake, but personally I feel that it warrants a deep gloss black and go the understated classy look, black and chrome and let the lines of the car speak of that time when guys were looking back at the classy Bugatti's etc for inspiration, but were putting their own modernising twist.

I personally would love a car like this, dare to be different!

All ideas welcome ...I will probably change my mind a 100 times before it ever gets ready for paint...and if I ever find any pics of it from when it was first built that may influence me as well. The inside of the trunklid is a vintage gold/coppery color so it must have been that color at one time...

It sure would be nice to find out the history on this car. Somebody out there knows all about it. A car like that doesen't go unnoticed.

Seems like there are some custom policemen who come out every time an old car is found with all kinds of comments due to their vast knowledge of period design, construction, and history. (And especially if there is any bondo present.) Who are they, and what is their resume? Thanks for posting this , and good luck in your research, that will be a neat car someday. (So how are things on Oak Island these days?)

I think the car is rad and I also feel that its a shame that grown men can't be a little more courteous of one another and have to openly blast some one for something that they are into.

    grow up guys.

I say put a chrome 40's dash in it and paint it pearl pink.

that would be some serious hotness.

I´d love to see this restored. I only have two suggestions. One would be remove the upper pair of taillights (overkill!) and the second is to make a one piece hood. The divided hoods on these never seem to fit very well and the front of it is a mess stylistically. I suggest you mould it and smooth the whole area out.

Glad to see the history is starting to come out! Very unique car. It's kinda surprising to see how many HAMBsters have owned it.

It seems like there is a fairly significant percentage of people on the HAMB who only exist to piss in other people's Wheaties.

If you can't find the actual history, the car has plenty of cues to tell you what it once was. The fully chromed 265, the style of the build, etc. puts it pretty firmly in the late 50s/early 60s. Paint her candy (whatever your favorite color is) with some chrome reverses, put a dual quad smallblock under the hood that sparkles like a mofo, and you'll have to knock the admirers away with a stick.

The dash may have been covered with tuck n roll upholstery. It was mentioned that there were not any gauges in it earlier on. I could vision the dash covered similar to the headliner and look period correct. The black paint of the dash looks similar to the inner door panel; painted to seal it but not for show. Just a thought.

I too like the look of the car. A little outside the box. :)

  21. koolkemp, thanks for trying to save another vintage custom! It's great to see folks on here come together to help you fill in some history on it as well.

If you are planning to keep it true to the period it was built and yet add your personal touches to it I personally think that's an awesome idea. Lord knows how these things evolve though the various owners and if you feel changes to the car will smarten it up to your tastes - GREAT! I like the visual changes JamesD suggested for the front and thought I would offer an opinion for the tail light area. To keep the builder's theme while trying to "unclutter" the rear fenders, I too feel one per side would work better. What I did here was eliminate the bottom light, move the top one down and back (hoping to add to it's visibility a bit), and continue the flair into the wheel surround to better match the flared front fender. Just some thoughts..

    Enjoy your custom!

If you don't like the "look" of this car, then you apparently don't like the custom cars of the late 50's, early 60's depicted in the little books..as it fits right in with the rest of them. Cool car for a lot of reasons. Sorry can't help with the history.
