Dang..that's a good idea for a toy hauler! Got this old single axle Spartan...tows like it's not even back there..
Here are some I just placed (before I actually found this section): http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=24124&pictureid=265953
Hi ! Just wanted to share my long awaited Spartan trailer with you guys that loves the old aluminum Campers . Fall of 2005 My great friend Rik helped me vision with his photoshop work what it would look like having a Spartan behind my -50 Buick and I was hooked . Spring of 2006 I won the eBay auction in Mojave California and had it stored til fall of 2010 when I finally got a contact that could help me transport it to Sweden . Please also see the pictures I got from the start 2006 to homecoming 2011 at my Fotki album : http://public.fotki.com/TinWolf/spartans-and-other-/our-1950-spartan-ro/ Happy motoring ! Wolf
The pictures of the caravans got me to thinking, is there a HAMB vintage Camper show or Caravan out there? Is there any interest on doing something like this?
yeah, but look what you're pullin' it with. is that an imperial? that thing probably weighs more than my crew cab dually. and probably gets better mileage, too...
Wow. You're determined, to ship that monster to Sweden. Spartans are THE best trailers ever built, hands down. We are getting our '46 Manor ready for this years first trip, leaving for the Tin Can Tourist Spring Ralley tommorow in Milford this weekend (which means I'll miss Billetproof in Yipsi). There are other pics in this thread, but here it is all shined up and ready to roll. Brian
Wow, great build photos! Thanks for posting! I know this has been said before, but this is a pretty damn kool thread!!!
Ca you guesstimate the weight of the Spartan, and how does it tow with the wagon? I'm always amazed at the back in the day photos of model a's and stovebolt chevies towing campers. Compare it to today's road warrior diesel trucks! Thanks
Here's ours! Just had it given to us in April of this year. Runs but on our first trip we figured out the Ford 390 is worn out. So I am in the process of installing a 289 Studebaker V8 and an automatic transmission to make towing the Avanti easier. Also gearing down to 4.10's from 4.88's. Here the inside. Here is what we tow with it. Here is a picture taken two weekends ago in Buellton. These cool people came by dressed in period garb so we got them to pose with the camper. They loved it. So did a whole lot of other people. Enjoy. Dan

Bitchin' old campers, guys; makes me long for my old Chinook with the gaslight dinette! (Hard to find a vintage model without dry-rot....B.A. Dan's is not only unique, but in very good shape!)
Speaking of Gaslight, check out the interior light in the Camper. The camper is in very good shape. The speedometer shows 32,000 miles and after a close inspection it appears that the mileage could be correct. The speedometer still works. The history is that the truck was used by a gold miner in California until his passing at 90. Family sold it to a guy in Lompoc who sold it to the guy and his wife who gave it to us to support our Bonneville effort. Our trip last month was the first time the camper had been on the road in over ten years. Built in 1952 in Toole, Utah by the Vista Leisure Coach and Trailer Company. Truck was sold to the company by Studebaker as a complete truck. They cut the outer fenders off the bed, added 14" to the frame and then built the camper around the bed. The orginal inner fenders and bed floor are still intact and mostly rust free. Look for the camper at Speed Week at Bonneville next month. When you find it you will also find a whole host of fast Studebakers. So far there will be 6 Studebaker powered land speed Stude's there. Dan
I was at the Arroyo Grande 100 year celebration on Sunday and saw a cool looking Cortez motorhome that was restored and converted into a cup cake selling wagon. Very nice inside and out. I told the guy who owned it to check out this web site and post some pictures. He told me he had another one at home that he was working on too. I will keep an eye out for him at local events and this time I'll make sure I have my camera. Dan
