This morning I went to the Glendale swap and then headed to Doyle Killebrew's place where he shaved my skinny whites into wide whites. They look KILLER. I'll take some better shots tomorrow but here are a few of when he was doing it. Money WELL SPENT.
Thanks...took about an hour. Did not have to take tires off car. I can not believe more people do not do this......Cash cow if you ask me.
I just let the ole lady drive for bout a week & change tires to other side . WHOA ! She has a deal going on with curbs .
They are Cornells from Pep Boys. Did it cheap when I got the tires.....The guy that shaved them has a machine made in the 70's that he uses. They came out around 2" when finished. I am very happy with it.....I'd love to find one of those machines.
Oh, I see there's a video on youtube i'm trying to find of a guy using a grinder to get the same effect i'll post if I do
I thought mine was the only one that did that shit back in the eights frends ask why I had white walls on one side and white letters on the other
Is this Mike or Eve ? Blasted the Razors in the garage this past weekend ! The new CD is KILLER. Yep ! We met at Viva and have chatted through Harmony central....and mike and I chat through the Gretsch pages and what not......
wouldnt doing this compromise the strength of the sidwall? and effect the safty and reliabilty of the tires? along with causing uneven tread ware?
does he still do mobile service? a buddy of mine had him shave his about 8 yrs ago or so and he came out and did it in the driveway.
i remeber a tech week thread on this, guy did it with an angle grinder with sanding disks on it. il see if i can find it
Guy around here does it for between 8-15 bucks a tire off car, and it's cheapest if you bring him dismounted tires, and his machine is the only one I've ever seen that does em off car off wheel. White letter tires can be done but I've noticed that a "ghost" of the lettering shows afterward, especially once the tire starts getting dirty.

I've been doing this for years. Done raise white letter tires too. Never had any problem with "ghosting"
Dont matter to much what you buy , the bigger the letters the bigger the whitewalls is a rule of thumb . You have to be carefull not to go to big as the white inlay is not always symetrical & you won't end up with perfect lines . Over the years i've done a bunch of these , some tyres leave a black line where the inlay is overlaped . Its just the luck of the draw as to what you end up with as a finished product .
Here's a link to the machine that does these. The shaft sticking out spins the tire and then you ajust the grinding wheel on the arm up against your tire and it grinds off the black. http://allanrozak.shawwebspace.ca/photos/view/cosmo_grinder/
