Those cars had no economic OR nostalgic value at the time. Many (or most) were worn out within 20000 miles. Most of the ones seen there are 5-10 years old. If you've ever seen old photos of auto boneyards the amazing thing is that most haven't been wrecked. They were just parked and abandoned-no resale value &cost to repair was more than the car was worth. And yes, Ford melted them down and made new Fords out of them. He did the same with a m***ive fleet of merchant ships after WW I.

One of my wifes Grandfathers worked at a s**** yard back in the 1960's The Ford plant in town used to bring in LOADS of brand new sheet metal for s**** when the body styles would change. Her other Grandfather ran a body He would come in and haul most of it back out and use it to repair cars at his shop. He also sold a bunch of it to other body shops around town when there was a strike at the supply plant and none of the other shops could get parts to fix cars. Too bad it's all gone now!

The first club garage we built was in an old junk yard. [1958] We would burn cars Fri night drink beer watch them burn, The on Sat cut them up s**** them. Then we would buy cement blocks with the s**** money. Burning was the easiest was to clean out the inside.

it`s strange how we americans recycled some of our own usa built equipment to beat japan in a war only to see most cars that are bought today are of japan orgin.along with motorcycles.even alot of our american cars and motorcycles parts come from japan to build them.as said already they were only junk back then.just like that sunbird or ltd that we think nothing of throwing away might be worth something someday.you just never know.

Is this a clip of the 1930's version of Cash For Clunkers? What a waste of good cars.
