can you tell me about the transmission and bellhousing in the pic when you say late model ,? thanks from Rod,,
Some of you have talked about running inserts for the main bearings.. Where do I get some/ what does it take?? Just got the quote for new babbits... Ouch!!
It'll take a good machinist that knows what he's doing. You can't just pop in inserts. One of my "bangers" (a Model B that came with my race car) had babbitt mains; and inserts in the crank throws. The insert rod bearings were ones from a Standard (Brit.), the same engine in a TR-2. They were hard to find. My current engine has GM inserts (both mains and rods). However, I gotta tell ya: It ain't cheap. So I wouldn't have a crank breaking as often; I had one ground out of a solid piece of forging. There are girdles made to fit Ford "Bangers", that have five main bearings. My engine, that has lasted five seasons, without blowing out the bottom end, has five mains. Of course, I wind that little bugger up to 5000 rpm. You might just be as well off, if you're not winding your "banger" much over 2500 rpm, to go with the babbitt and a stock crank. However, babbitt or inserts, if you have any three main crank in an A or B, there's no such thing as a C (I bet I get another argument about that), you are eventually going to break that crank, if you buzz your engine above 3000 rpm. The remedy is to put a damper on the nose of the crank.
ok i am confused i took a perfectly good running model b engine no smoke or knocks took it apart (pan front cover head cam and valve cover) replace the cam with a stipe cam and abjustable lifters new aluminum timing gear new aluminum front cover new gaskets now i have huge amounts blow by out the breather and out the exhaust smoke...blues smoke i pulled the plugs and they are oily what just happened literally 20 min of run time help tk
My guess... when you cleaned your deck of all the carbon and shit you might have got some stuff stuck in your rings
i didnt need to clean the pistons this engine was a very recent rebuild i was thinking maybe a head gasket, so i just went and did a compression test with about 60 lbs across the board stock b head tk
I would run it some more and see if it clears up. There is no oil on the top so it has to come from the pistons Did you put too much oil in it after you put it back together?
no i checked it i was thinking about just running it to see maybe a few good heat cycles its still colder than hell here and have no roof is hindering my street time maybe i'll bundle up tomorrow and hot lap it aroun the neighborhood tk
sure how many quarts of oil do you think it would take to get from Illinois to torrington. Maybe Steve henkle can ride along lol tk
I've a couple hundred sets but I am in the US now and they are in Europe I can report in about 6 weeks
tub in da dirt, did you hone your cylinders to break the glaze when you had it apart? and did you put new rings in? if you honed it and put the old rings back in that can be your problem.
2 questions, anyone have cam specs on a gemsa full race A cam for a T block. and would the harmonic balancer that speedway sells for a flathead v8 work on a banger? isnt the crank snout for an A or B the same as a v8?
March Meets earlier this month, only Banger there. Drove out had a great time drove home like usual. Even my biddy Model A Dave didn't drive his red banger powered 40 pickup. He was under the alias of Model T Steve this year with his bitchen flathead v8 powered T. Surprised the hellout of him how fast I drove in. I figure about 65 tops which is not really anything too crazy, just caught me off gaurd when we got the gas station and he said that. Heres some pics of my endeavor fellas.-Weeks
There's been a bunch of photos of my car posted on the HAMB. I thought, perhaps I was over doing it. Here's some more. Thanks, Don't need none of that "furr'n" car stuff no more; I sold the engine to a hotrodder that was putting it in a LSR car
I did see the your very cool car.I just didn't put you with it sorry. I think it would be cool if you posted pics every week that car will never get old in my eyes thanks again Bill
Thanks Bill, I guess the new organizers of the Monterey event, "The Rolex Monterey Motor Sports Reunion", finally, after nine years of appearances, got tired of seeing it. I just got word, the day before yesterday, that the little car will not be invited to the event this year. We will be running at Steve Earle's Sonoma Historic Motor Sports Reunion at Infineon Raceway (Sears Point), the first weekend of June. The last of April, we'll be running it at VARA's Route 66 Classic, on the two mile, AAA Speedway oval. We're trying to get enough "pre-war" cars to run an event on the infield road course there. As that weekend gets closer, I'll remind the SoCal folks. That Route 66 Classic is the greatest bargain in today's motor racing. For $10.00 (kids under 12 fee), spectators can get a three day pass to the exhibitions and races
