Playland

<!-- /jumpto --><!-- bodytext -->Playland (also known as Playland at the Beach and Whitney's Playland beginning in 1928) was a 10-acre (40,000 m<SUP>2</SUP>) seaside amusement park located next to Ocean Beach at the western edge of San Francisco along the Great Highway where Cabrillo and Balboa streets are now. It began as a collection of amusement rides and concessions in the late 19th century, and was known as Chutes At The Beach as early as 1913. It closed Labor Day weekend in 1972.

I used to hang out at Playland in the late 50's. Thanks for the memories! The diving bell used to scare the crap outa me when i surfaced> thanks again! Crow. LFFL

 

Must have been one helluva' road trip!

 

I know this place well. I grew up across the river in Burlington, Vt. I remember the the sound of the machinery and shuttles at work in the summer when the mill windows were open. There was a larger complex across the road which is now converted to high end condominium residences.

 

Oh I miss these days...

Had some good meals with my parents at the Bristol Inn in Bristol Vermont. A very old historic place torn down and replace with a drug store. Probably before it could be designated an historic site. Ethan Allen reportable eat there as well as other early American revolutionaries

My Dad with is hands on his hips at Indy, 1956-58.
He would take vacation time off from the police department to go to Indy to film it from Turn 1 for Sid Davis Productions. Dick Wallen also went with dad and Dick ended up making racing films and books for a living, and still does...

Bimbo's 365 Club, also known as Bimbo's 365, is an entertainment club located at 1<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com</st1:Street><st1:address w:st="on">025 Columbus Avenue</st1:address> in <st1:City w:st="on">San Francisco</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">California</st1:State>. It specializes in live rock and jazz shows. The location is one of <st1:City w:st="on">San Francisco</st1:City>'s oldest nightclub sites, and has operated under two names with a series of owners. The building started as Bal Tabarin in 1931, the same year that the 365 Club started at <st1:Street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">365 Market Street</st1:address></st1:Street>. The two locations under separate ownership consolidated in 1951 to one location owned by Agostino "Bimbo" Giuntoli. It's still in existence today.

I took photos of a building exactly like this in the Northern states somewhere, I think it was Minnesota, back in 98.

 

Today we have Conflict Resolution, Inclusion and Diversity studies in school. Back in the day (1940's) you had your choice:

it all took place at Samuel Gompers School, Richmond CA.



and it's still there, although it's now call the Horace Mann Jr. High School and has changed a bit.

I had that filed in a folder of early Los Angeles pics. I think Standard Automotive Machine Works was in Hollywood.

I had second thoughts about posting the before and after pics so I kept it fairly short, in fact I was prepared to close the file on that kinda posting....

Soon after hosting up the shots the pm's started and then when checking in today others have piped up.
It's good to know that others can enjoy and/or reminisce about things like this.
