Hot Rods Went to Austin with an empty trailer....drove back home full! Finally got my '55

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by RoadFarmer, Apr 4, 2011.

  1. I finally found a '55 project.
Drove to Austin with an empty trailer......was awesome driving back full. Here's some pics of it now.....Plans are to make it an early 60's style gasser.
Looks like it needs a HUGE attitude adjustment.
Sits real nice for now though, gotta sell my '66 Caddy and my '64 Imperial...then I want to get all the suspension work done. My little guy, Gerrit, really likes it. BUILD THREAD to follow someday.......

great chevy. don't chop it up! btw: from the looks of the layout of the land, you are overdue for a category 5 tornado. i'd build a shelter before i did any work on that 55.

why not find one that needs more help? that one looks great the way it is! would be a shame to turn that into a gasser, but it is your car.

  11. I knew I was gonna get people telling me not to cut it up....but I want it to be REALLY nice someday....why start with a $3500 car and get $10,000 in body work and rust repair in it.

oh and dragsta....we have a basement!! Wish I could build an underground garage too!

Congratulations! I saw that car in the "any cars for sale at the round up" thread and was thinking perfect gasser material. Heck just with those wheels/tires rolled up next to it really changes the attitude of it.
Can't wait to see the build thread.....

good luck on the build. you are correct, start with a good car and the entire project goes better.

Let me know if I can offer any free advice. You will get what you pay for!

You probably won't like what most of us have to say as the majority probably can't see hacking up a pretty nice driver into a Gasser style car that will be a royal pain in the butt to drive any real distance and probably end up being a trailer queen at best.

That car has the same stance as a little 55 Tudor post that one of the "older" guys in town had when I was a sophomore in High School. His was Jet black and I can't remember what wheels it had but I think black steelies with moons and narrow whitewalls. It was too spendy on the car lot after he traded it in on a 63 Corvette fast back that he special ordered that fall.

Sit and think on this a bit and maybe the rest of this year while you drive it to a few events. Do you want a cool little tudor that you can jump in and take a road trip without batting an eye that still gets everyone's attention and makes the little guy grin like a chessie cat or do you want to hack it up an make a gasser out of it that you will only drive a couple hundred miles a year and have to trailer everywhere beyond 30 miles from the house because it really doesn't drive well on the road due to the mods to turn it into a jacked up gasser clone.

  23. what's the difference from a gasser clone or a real gasser? not trying to start a fight....just curious what people think

    Congratulations! Nice Car!
I don't think you necessarily have to give up drivability to go with the Gasser look. There are plenty of good looking 55's out there that aren't jacked up to the sky. Here's a few examples...

great looking car, I saw it there at the Round-up,...looks like you wont have a problem with neighbors if your working on it late in the night. You could watch your dog run away for three days!

  29. You're right Jim. I plan on having mine sit something like that red car... I have pics of your car in my ideas folder too, love the radius job on your car
