In the new Hot Rod Deluxe there are a couple of shots of a 40 Ford coupe with a Chevy six. It shows them to be from this issue with more coverage than the two shots. I have searched the net for one for sale and find two listed but two different covers and neither say anything about such a car in the issue. Can anyone verify if the Aug 58 issue is the correct one for coverage of this 40? Also what is on the cover. Thanks.
I have a copy. Unfortunately the cover is missing so I can't answer that question. My copy isn't for sale, but if you give me a few minutes I'll scan it in for you
I can't upload the scan for some reason, so if you PM me you email address, I'll try emailing it to you.
August 58...Only have the cover scan on my computer. Cant tell you the contents without digging it out of storage.
Thanks CG, GreenMonster48 was kind enough to scan and send the article. Ain't the HAMB a great place to be.
Wow, I remember that issue, and as a kid I wore it out. The "look" of that '40 stuck in my head all these years. An inspiration for me !
You're welcome. I was unable to post the pages right away because I was away from the computer with the pictures on it when I first read your post. Mutt
You guys are incredible! I am overwelmed with the power of the HAMB,very good stuff. That is the car and article,I will be glad too put up some pics, what would you guys want too see? The car has halibrand quick change . 302gmc (335) 3 97s, vertex mag,etc just as shown. I drove the car to my HS graduation 27years ago, has not been driven since. It's always been garaged,no rust, just 35 coats of old lacquer. I am currently building 40 PU also with gmc, I have fabricated an intake and exhaust for the jimmy .The plan is build the truck and it will put my head in the right place for good decisions on the coupe restoration. thank all of you for the great response. Tell me what you wanna see? fabman
I wanna see that rear spring setup for sure. I would like to see as many clear pictures of the general engineering of the car. From what the 58 article shows, it is outstanding. I have been a 40 fan for the majority of my life [since about 1960 at least] and this is one of the most intriging I have seen. We had a local guy with one with a Jag six, but I never got to see the installation. Thanks for the reply, we wait with baited breath. Joe
There shouldn't be any decisions to made on the restoration of the car. Just take it apart and rebuild it as it was. No changes!!! Exactly how the Doctor built it!
Keep it original for a while, do the magazine circuit, then do what you want with it. Though I haven't had anything near as cool as your forty, I know what it's like to have something original you want to change and a village mob appears every time you talk about changing it.
I will attemp to get some pics over the weekend and post them. How can I do a better job at getting exposure about the early history of the car? My father said the Doc built the car to run against vettes of that era, he drove the car to the drags changed the gears ,put a whoopin on the vettes changed the gears back and drove her home all while wearing the cool white suit. It was ran in Ca. at ?? drag strips old pics etc would help complete the story/history. thanks fabman
Oh man, you've made my day!!!! I have the issue here. Its well thumbed!!! I even know where there's a 40 coupe, and if I had the green, I'd buy it just to build a slightly different version of your car - a bored and stroked 261 Chev with 3 jugs, packard trans, and a q/c too. I would love to see more pictures of this car, as its my fav 40
Hey Guys, I have a few pics in my album that I took. I will get more when I can rool the car outside. fabman
Oh my goodness, I was not expecting it to look so good. You certainly have a piece of hot rod history there. Would love to hear how you came to have it. Hope you can discover more about the original owner, etc. You need to start a thread on here with all your pictures and the story of how you acquired it. I will bet some more details will result. I am sure that Bill Commane would be delighted that is had been in good hands all this time. Thanks for posting those pictures.
Okie, I sat the horse shoe on the right rear bumper irons of the car a long time ago for good luck. It is just sittng there! I have emailed the editor of Hot Rod Mag. per your suggestion, I will let you guys know what I learn.
I just checked out the pictures in your album - it sure is great to see this car servive intact after all these years. Credit to you.
Thanks, I have tried to take care of the car within my means. It was the first thing I likely helped my father work on when I was about 5 years old, if holding the trouble light in the wrong spot counts, LOL that was 41 years ago. I have been hooked ever since. fabman
What a great look when you consider how subtle the changes are. Also surprised that long 6 fits in there. I guess '41 was the first Ford 6. Absolute stunner.
Would definitely be interested in the whole story and love the car just the way she sits. I think I would "lightly" restore it and drive it!
Joe, I remember the '40 with the Jag six; I was in the Tulsa Early Ford V-8 Club in '73-'75 and I remember the car at meetings, but I can't remember who owned it. Do you have any photos of the '40 you had in '80? That's the one I'd like to have
