opening up the gap so the mig wire has some were to go and when you grind the welds they wont crack becase the welds inbetween the panels insted of on top its the opasit of tig were you need tight gaps

Is this for REAL? I've been shooting myself in the foot all these years? I have always tried to get no gaps then mig my panels together, and yep they crack sometimes.

unless you get vary good penitration the mig weld just ends up on top of the panel then were or when your grind it down theres is lil or no weld left when we mig sheet metal we always mwke sure there is a gap weve fixed a few chops were they had a tight gap on the a & b pillars then the tried to metal finish then and they ended up cracking like i sdaid this is how we do it!

  16. Super nice job on the chop - and you really do make it look easy! The rendering is great - it will be a real bitchin looking truck when it's done! I've presently have 2 39 Ford p-up cabs for sale (no where near as nice as the one you are working with I will say) - it's definitely making me rethink selling them!

    Awesome job as always

  21. Great thread guys, I really like the way you cut the top, it looks like there is less chance of the top going flat in the welded areas. I had my 40 PU chop'd 2" a few years ago, the fellow I selected to do the job cut the top all the way across from drivers side to pass side, in welding it back together he overheated the metal and got flat spots across the the top which had to be hammered out, more time and money to get it right, your way is much better I think. THANKS FOR POSTING.

what an incredible post, it has answered alot of questions i have had, but i do have one i would hope can get answered. by the pictures it looks like you didnt need to make relief cuts in the rear cab corners to make the roof line up, did it align that well without doing them or am i just not seeing the cuts? thaks so much, that is incredible work!

Awesome thread and great work! I'm also glad guys like you take time out of your busy schedule to post this unique info. The way you did the roof makes a lot more sense to me. Great job again, and keep up the great work!
