60's look? with an 8mm belt and an aftermarket blower? not trying to say bad, just, hell i don't know, just asking i guess...........
I seen the coolest gto in Bakersfield about 10 years back and the license plate was EYEBRNR and that's about all i remember cause whatever kind of fuel it was using gave me the biggest gashuffer buzz and burned my eyes so bad i thought it shot razor blades into them. Wish I had a pic.
K-member, there's a picture of the GTO you are talking about at Famoso on page 6 post 112 Classic Gary, What year did Don Hampton start casting the 871 cases ? What was the first year that 8mm drives were introduced ? My ear is always open.
That engine looks great and I don't care if it's got the wrong year whatever parts on it, nice freaking job !
Thanks Guys for all of the kudos. Sometimes it seems a bit overwhelming and you wonder if you're ever gonna get'er done. So the compliments definitely help. Classic, you had me thinking about your post today. I know this car isn't 100% 1964 true, but it's pretty close. There's always something to pick on on just about everyones car, but that's what makes us all different. I'm sure people will probably comment that my front wheels are not magnesium and that they have the word Rocket on the center cap. Whatever. I can't please everyone. As far as the blower goes I thought I did pretty good by just ordering an as cast blower from Don Hampton who I'm sure you have heard of. The drive pulleys are borrowed from my 66 GTO racecar since it is a much higher horsepower set up and I'm limited on where I spent the $$$ for this build. I may go down to the lower capacity 1/2 drive later on. However I did have to order the idler plate and idler pulley and I got those in raw machined form so they are not shiny either. I can tell you that Don started casting his 871 blower cases in 1968 and the 8mm drives came in to play in the early 70's. Now if I would have used the 2 850 Demon carbs like I was planning on doing until I set them on and saw how out of place and ridiculous they looked, I'd give you all permission to rip me a new one. I hope most of you guys can dig the look I'm shooting for. Thanks, Dil
I got the steering wheel mounted and the shock mounts welded in today. My boy was helping me with both. I love it when he hangs out with me in the shop. Going to work on the fuel system tomorrow.
Its good to see your son lending a hand. Teach 'em young. I still remember the first day I got to help my Dad and that was in the mid '1960s. I'm really digging this build.
It looks good to me, and even if its not 100% correct its fun. The ones that pick it to death dont have the stones to build one themselves.
CRH, That is an AWESOME picture ! I love it. Still plugging away here. Well this one is a first, and I've been saving it for the last part of the major body work. One of the "Genius" previous owners decided it would be best to glue asphalt roofing material over the rusted out trunk floor. Hey, I guess if it'll keep water outta your house it'll keep water outta your trunk right ? The floor is so bad that the first time I tried to open the trunk the latch was hanginging up. So I gave it a big jerk and the entire trunk latch assembly came loose from the floor and stayed connected to the deck lid. So now I'll cut it all out and start fabbing up the mount for the fuel cell.
Guys, I'm a drag racer at heart and have been drag racing, wrenching, building engines, and restoring Pontiac's since 1979. Though I have ALWAYS thought GASSERS were cool, I never looked into the actual rules for the class. I've just always been on a go fast mission with my 66 GTO and built it in 1989 to fit into the S/G class though I never ran the class and in fact honestly (here's the H word) hate throttle stop racing. It's very boring. But I am a bracket racer. Now that I've been building my 64 GTO project, I've learned (through the HAMB) that my build really isn't a GASSER. I'm 47 years old now and have ALWAYS thought that a straight axle, raised up high in the front, whether it was dual carbs, injected or blown was a gasser. I had never taken the time to read the class rules so little did I know that moving the axle forward 1" from the factory location could disqualify the car from being a true Gasser. Ya have to go by the rules if you want your car to fit into a certain catagory. I should have known this when I started my thread because I have had to follow the rules for S/ST 10.90, S/G 9.90, S/C.8.90 and Quick 16. So I apologize to the guys who's feathers I ruffled in this thread with the comments I made not knowing the true class rules until I read the old rule book that was posted. I think in general, like what I always thought was a gasser is the general perception of what the car is. So now, what really is my car ? It looks like a gasser, It will have a full interior, it will have a blown engine, a stock style rear end in original loction, full fenders, but no front inner liners (DQ), and front axle moved forward a few inches (DQ). Had to do it that way since I'm using the factory chassis, using all of the real glass, approved wheels, etc. Will it be a cool car when it's finished ? I think so. Should I call it a GASSER ? Doesn't look like it. So is it now and Altered Wheel Base? So you all know, I didn't start this project with the mindset that it had to fit into a certain class. I started it with the mindset of a "Certain Look" I know when she's done, It will comply with the NHRA book for ET, speed, car requirements and safety. Crazy Johnny, I apologize I didn't mean to jack your thread, but flet I owed some of the purist guys here an apology for the comments I made. I'm going to put this same post on my 64 GTO Gasser thread to hopefully let guys know I'm really not an A hole and just want to build a cool car. Thanks, Dil PS I copied this over from Crazy Johnny's Gasser thread.
Don't let it worry you. Just say 'gasser-style' and people will get it. Don't let the rule junkies get you down!
Right! You have an excellent looking car, and excellent workmanship. A masterpiece! Don't apologize to the flakes. This is your car, and you are going to be driving it. I can't wait to see video of it going down the track. Best Regards, Bill
Man what I nice build thread - thanks for sharing. A lot of things to learn from Can't wait to se her finished!
I had to cut out most of the trunk floor due to it being so rusted out. Today I worked on fabbing up the fuel tank mount.
Looks good! What motor are you running? Pontiac power is the way to go and will be going into my 31 Model A. Keep up the great work!
Solo, If you need any help with engine set up or combination, feel free to shoot me a PM, email me superchargedill@yahoo.com or call my cell 918-340-3283. I've been playing with Pontiac's for a long time. Not an expert, but we get down the road swiftly. Dil
Sat 4/22. I tapped the scoop base so I could get that mounted and finished. The throttle linkage is complete. I had Chuck at CW Auto Fab redrill the factory axles from a 5 on 4 3/4 to a 5 on 4 1/2 to fit the rear wheels my friend Nick gave me. I got them installed, put the brakes back together and got the wheels on the car. Both fenders are back on and the nose is bolted back into place. I had to trim the lower edge of the fender just in front of the wheel since the axle is forward a bit. Also had to cut just a little of the inner bend right where the header collector is. Came out a little on the close side. I also got the headlight buckets mounted that my friend Andre sent me since the car didn't have any when I bought it. I still have to fab up some shock mounts to fit the new coil over shocks and get the a$$ end raised up a bit. Right now she's sitting on heated, collapsed coil springs. The good news is that all of my measurements worked out okay and I got the right size tires. They clear all the way around
I love it. You are going to have one bad ho'say when your done. Do your own thing and let the gasser police condem rate it anyway they want. I got alot of your features and mine is a gasser. Dont care what the pro's think. I like your car alot........its a gasser in my eyes John
