I'm getting ready to install my cam in my sbc and was wondering what break in additive you all like to use or recommend. Its basically a stock 1970 350 sbc and I'm going to put a mild hydraulic cam. Thanks
I like to use the Moly based cam break in lube you get with the cam. The ZDDPlup is also a good idea. We run it in everything from Flat head to Ferrari's.
Is all this stuff mail order only? Are there any good break in additives in the parts stores. I'm getting close to a fresh start up. I like using cash and hate paying shipping.
There are a large variety of "Break In" oils and most major parts stores have them. Unless the engine is a "high end" race engine all of these will work just fine. Good luck !
GM Engine Oil Supplement--EOS http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results.cfm?singlepart=1&partnumber=EOS This is what GM reccommends, and is what I have been using for 35 years. Used to be if you wanted warranty on a GM cam you better have a can of this on the sales slip, also. overspray
I just put Valvoline synthetic racing oil in the engine and go. I have never lost a cam to wear and my chrome rings seat almost instantly. How to break in an engine has been discussed here many times and it does NOT involve idling and low rpm's. "Been in the cam business 59 years"

I just used Lucas on the 390 in my 60 Tbird, run it at 2000 rpm for twenty minutes as per the machine shop that did the block work, we'll see how it holds up now. Last flat tappet motor I did didn't add anything and have around 7000 miles on it with no problems.
If I use break in additive I use the stuff from GM. You buy it at the dealer. good stuff. When I was working for Hap Jones we used Castrol break in oil on the bikes. I have used it in cars with good success but if you go to autozone and say I want 5 quarts of Castrol break in oil they ore going to go "HUH?"
