Vince Mule '55 Chevy One of the best '55's ever

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by superiorslots, Apr 12, 2011.

  1. Whatever happened to Vince Mule's Street Freak '55? IMO this was one of the best '55 ever made-well at least in my top 5. Car was featured in nearly every magazine in '74-'75 then just dropped out of site.

Anyone know where this car is today? Hope it's not lowered and running with 20 billet rims.

I saw a pic someone took of it when it was at the NSRA Street Machine/Van Nationals in Tulsa and now can't find it. Looked really nice with candy blue paint, white headers and Cragars.

  2. I love g***ers but this one is too high and too fat a back tire for my taste. Say no to DONK g***ers.

It's not a g***er....it's a street freak. Not everything with fenders and a straight axle is a g***er.....contrary to popular opinion these days.

You're right, and I have no idea where it is.....

The "g***er" mania thing is beginning to bug the **** out of me here lately...it's bordering on the R$%%Rod thing.....people going gaga over straightaxle cars, building semi-street freaks with 305 SBC's and calling them "g***ers"....do some friggen homework, esp. if your going to call yourself gasrguy

  9. You are absolutely correct and I really appreciate the fact the Superiorslots knows the difference and referenced it as a street freak in the very first post on the thread.

I can't say that it would be high on my list of must haves but it is well built for what it is. Its really not a bad looking car and fits its era perfectly.

With "One of the best '55's ever" in the ***le, you're gonna get opinions.

As far as Street Freaks go, you either love 'em or hate 'em, not much in between.

Sorry, I don't know where it is either.

  11. Yeah. It's one of those cars you either like it or you don't. I first started to get into cars in '75 and this car was one of the first I remember and I still like it to this day.

Vince drove this car all the way from California to Tulsa and back so the car was definitely not just a trailer queen poser.

I'm guessing the car probably continued to follow the fads... down, up, down, up

They were called Street Freaks in the 70s. Some guys loved them, others were down on them, etc just like today.

I used to sit in study hall in Jr High and just drool over this car. I'd love to see it today also but as pointed out, it's most likely went through many changes since then. I just hope one of them wasn't pastel.

I remember seeing that car in a lot of the car mags back then. It would be cool to see what ever happened to it.

It probably went "Pro Street" in the 80's, after that, who knows.....

love the look but the blocks between the axle and springs are not the way to do it.

  18. I with you Abomb. I was into g***ers and owned mine before the big craze! When i first started driving mine all over people asked what the hell it was, I told them it was a g***er and no one knew what a g***er was!!!

    nothing wrong with a 305 sbc "g***er";)

i also have no clue where the car is.

  21. UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE

I just spoke with Vince nearly an hour on the phone. The Vince Mule (pronounced Mulay) '55 is alive and well and still sitting in Vince's garage 100% exactly as it was back in the day. Paint, wheels, interior etc never updated. Still has the Firestone dirt tires that need airfilled every 3 days because they bleed off air.

Car is up on blocks covered in blankets and has not been registered in 30 years though he did take it around the block 8 months ago.

He drove the car to the NSRA Street Machine Nat's in Des Moines (not Tulsa) in '75 and due to another convention in town there were no rooms so he and his friend slept under the car in the hotel parking lot the first night. He also broke the ****** at the Nat's and bought one from a guy there for $100 and literally replaced it on the side of the road.

Vince will not take pics-said he its not into that and people have called him before looking for the car. I gave him info about this thread but he said he is not really into computers either. Maybe one day he will post on this thread with pics-.

Glad to see another car that so influenced me in my youth is still alive and well and in it's original form.

OH..and we talked about Street Freaks and G***ers. Vince was adamant the car is a Street Freak and he is not that enthused with the new g***er trend -basically repeating what another poster above said.

I've kind of kept an eye on your "sketchy" thread, and I think you got the right idea and motivation....I wasn't neccesarily talking about your car....although a 301 would be cooler...:D

no offense taken. when i can score a 301 or any other cooler small block, that's ready to go, for the very limited budget i have to keep this car going down the road, i'll be sure to toss it under the gl*** nose. until then i'll just enjoy beating the bag out of a string of lame small blocks.

Thats awsome to know its still in existance . May not be my exact cup o tea but its bad*** to Vince and he has kept her for all these years and thats all that matters. to be honest tho , id drive the piss outa it witha huge grin on my face.

as far as the g***er craze goes.... I just started building mine 3 years ago , and no , i was not jumping on the bandwagon of throwing an axle under anything i could drag home.. When i was maybe 7 , i found a picture in a super chevy magazine . It was a black and white photo of a straight axle 55 with a bowtie in the center of the grille. That was THE baddest car ive ever seen , then i got introduced to American Graffitti around the same time and i knew i had to have a straight axle 55 chevy. It just so happen that i finally had the money to act on that interest around the big g***er craze. When folks ask me about my 55 anymore i very very rarely refer to it as a g***er , i just call it my axled hotrod 55 .

Hey, thanks for finding the car. I'm glad it didn't meet the fate that many figured it had.

Hopefully one day he decides to drag it out and show it again. FWIW, I really like many of the "g***ers" being built today.

  27. I've been into the gas cl*** drag cars for many years and had several over the years. I do know what a g***er is and THAT car is a 70's version of a 60's g***er just like some of the g***ers now go too far to chase a fad. Monster truck high dont cut it for me. Call it a "street freak" or anything else you want. It is cool that he kept it just like he built it. JMO and I still have that right unless Obamanation takes that too.

  28. Mac, if your car isnt a g***er, then there are none to be found. I LOVE your 55! I built several models when i was a kid with straight axles under them, and quite frankly I have always loved them! If you dont like them, then dont look at them!!!

Great thread! That exaggerated '55 is obviously a street freak that will get recognized as a "g***er" by some. So what!?!?!

For those that are whining about it, I don't really see the big deal. Really it is nothing more than a Rat Fink Ed Roth T-shirt come to life. And what could be bad about that?

Yeah, not traditional. But I would have loved to have checked it out back in the day. I would have loved to have seen it rumble down the street on a Saturday night. If you had any oil in your blood at all, it would have been hard not to dig it just a little at least!

And more than that, I would absolutely LOVE to see the car now. How unbelievably awesome to know that the car is just sitting there three decades later in the exact same cartoon like bad *** street freak style?!?!?!

I don't care if it is dusty, dirty, missing pieces, flat tires or whatever. I think there are a lot of people, HOT ROD magazine included that would just DIE to see that car today.

PLEASE show this guy these posts and let him know we would love to know more!

  30. Man... I'd love to see it!!
