When did chorme reverse become popular? I love the way they look, but am trying to keep my shoebox to a late fifties theme.

 

Jeff I've already told you this is absolute perfection...I didn't think you could make your truck look any better then you get this new rolling stock and air cleaners...and you prove me wrong. Are you going to be bringing it to waterdown again this year?

 

Actually, they were being done by customizers in '55; Barris and Winfield were up to speed with them then...but Valley Custom had done a couple of roadster jobs (one channeled yellow '34 roadster featured in HRM & Car Craft in '53)

But their popularity really started in '57, when the Appliance Company announced their new line of chrome wheels. (they were available in 14" & 15"; they weren't "reversed", but "inset". In Calif., Pep Boys, American Auto, Eastern Auto, Grand Auto had them.

In San Jose, reversed wheels ("Dumped Rims") could be had after class at San Jose Technical High School. (now San Jose City College)
Don Serventi and humble self had a major reversed wheel biz going there for 2 periods each thru the semesters of '57 and '58. They were distributed out of Don's '56 Chevy trunk.
Tex's Auto Wreckers provided the '49-'50 Merc wheels, '49-'55 Olds, '49-'56 Buick, and 5 and 6 lug Chevy wheels @ $3 each; Chevy brake pedals were $1 each.
We stripped, drilled rivets, and reversed and arc welded Mercs, Chevys, and Fords on order. $15 each, spray can painted black. Production costs raised price to $20 each the first month. $1 to change valve stem to outside. Extra charge for wider hoops, we were rollin' in dough. Instructor Mr. Ericson was grading us for the work, it was a win-win...
Then Don started running his Chevy at Fremont drags. We abandoned the business, as all the guys were going to chrome wheels...
Funny thing: When I found my F100 in 1971, I went out to see my friend Larry Fuller (who had bought Tex's Auto Wreckers) I needed some wheels for rolling the truck around, and came onto a set that I had 'dumped' at S.J.Tech! (had my stamp on the inside)
Larry gave them to me for 'chump change', (I still have 'em!) '50 Mercs with 6" outer hoops. Stems on the inside. (clean, and you can run Moon discs...)

 

Question: does early Ford steel wheels count as chrome reverses? Or is that term for specific wheels?

LOVE Chrome reverse wheels! Planning on a set for my Shoebox when I get her done.

Norwell- of the different wheel/tire combos you've had on the deuce, the chromies set it off the best. Absoluteley killer!

Nothing against your panel, but everytime you post that pic, I go nutz for the Maser behind it! My dad has a '66 Sebring, pretty similar.

 

DAMN! This is the truck I have always wanted to build, except flake, king bees and 6x2s on a log. I like those WAAAAY better than the americans!

Jeff, heres the car that got me all worked up to want to build a fenderless early sixties style '30-'34 PU. I would like do pretty much clone this, except a chrysler instead of an Olds, and a different color. The drawer-pull grill would be a "must". Have you seen this pic before? Anyone have any further info on this truck? Photo was shot by George Barris in the early sixties, apparently this truck was from New York. Dig the dual headlights, daddio!

uhmmmm...i'd probably kill for these.
would you know what OEM wheel was used? i mean, i would not have the cool tires, and will hav to chrome'em, but a good start is better than nuthin!

I LOVE this thread! Been debating on putting some chrome reverse rims on my Dart, but I'm not sure. I really wanna run wide whites on it too. Not something you see too often on an early Dart, and I think it'd look rad! Thanks for posting all these pics, fellas.
