Thats why a repop 34 grill is 2200.00...because most guys can't get an original nice enough to plate for cheaper then that so they just buy new. If plating were more arounf 1200.00 repops would be around that price as well.
Wow, it looks great, the bumper didn't work out so good. But I think this wil get even better as research continues on it. I have seen a lot of nice stuff done so far, the bumper is the first failure I have seen. Time will tell. I am very interested in the process, the real deal is going out of site, as we all know. ~sololobo~
That beats the price of Sherms by a long shot. Let me know how it holds up. I'll look for it in July at the Nor Cal Knockout.
so was it spektrachrome or another brand? i was actually looking into this stuff earlier tonight. and hotrodhabit, did you spray your bumper or take it somewhere to get it done?
I think it was the same product I use, because I can see some of their chemicals in the background. Cosmichrome.
it was spectraChrome, they have a bad rep as their coatings don´t hold up well... the guy wasted 20 grand on their complete system here his first thread about it http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=422901&highlight=silver+nitrate
Ed at Sacramento Chrome and Paint does use Cosmichrome products with a lot of success. I've talked to him at length and have even referred a big job to him because it was in his area and I couldn't get to it. The guys do nice work- as do you Stude-sled.
I get quite of few pot metal jobs to be refinished in spray chrome. There are some who would prefer chrome plating to have the authentic restored finish but can't find dip shops to do it. You're the only one I've heard say they would be willing to do it. If you don't mind getting your contact info to me I'll keep your number on file to refer these people. It's important to keep a network of guys willing to work together.
glad I came across this thread, the shop I work at is looking into getting set up with Spectrachrome. Does Cosmochrome hold up any better, or is spray chrome just not a good alternative to plating?
Make sure they do their research.Do some searches online for the different companies and see the feedback that's out there. There are a lot of us who have started with Spectra and switched to Cosmichrome. But their are other guys will tell you just the opposite. There are definitely differences in chemistry from one supplier to the next. Just know that regardless of the system you choose there's is a lot to learn. These systems are very sensitive to shop environment. It's a lot of work, but there is a lot of potential.
Sure thing Bulldog, Custom Metal Finishing IN 9705 State Road 38 Hagerstown, IN 47346 toll free# 866-489-4089 www.ChromePlatingIN.com I restore potmetal all the time, including welding, rot, and straightening repair. There are few examples on this build thread. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=272171&page=40&highlight=51+kaiser
The process my guy used is cosmichrome as Bulldog mentioned....Its looks out of sight!! AAA++ in my book...Ed is a great guy, he personally dropped the stuff off here at my house in Castro Valley from Sacramento. He straightened the grille bars, did some welding and a **** load of prep.I sent some more things back with him today for my 57 Plymouth when he was here.
jmo...sometimes i think chrome shops gouge, because they try to take in to context age of part, and if its rare or not..and price it knowing or feeling that.." the customers got the money". I feel they think..oh this guys restoring an old car or "he's a hot rodder", he's got loads of cash..lets help him spend some of it. 2+G's to chrome a grille...yeah, i'll get right back with you. I hope it holds up for you, because it might help wake up some places that think chrome is gold
its a 3 step process 1.Prep/single stage Black 2k Urethane(or white) 2.Silver layer(just like mirrors) 3.2k Urethane Clear coat and that's that.......Well some times it wont work well..
Look for Gold Touch Inc. online. They're the manufacturers for Cosmichrome. They are good about referring people to good shops nearby.
