Cadillac did have a port fuel injection system in the mid 70's for the 472/500 engines. It came out in 1975, mainly in the Eldo's but was available on other models also. It also available as an option in the full of 1977-1979 models on the detunes 425ci engines. It basically the same port fuel injection system used on the 76-79 Sevilles just bumped up for the large cubic inch engine. The 76-79 Sevilles used a 350ci Oldsmobile engine.
The later 368ci engine is the same engine block and the throttle body intake manifold from a 368ci should fit the 472/500 and 425 engines.

If you don't yet have it I highly recommend the book "Big Inch Cadillac" by Doc Frohmader. Its a wealth of information. Not too much in there about the fuel injection but a great resource on what parts will fit the different engines.

I got stalled out a couple of years ago on my fuel injection install. I'm building a MegaSquirt controller and isntalling the factory Caddy set up on my 500ci installed in a 49 F-1 truck

First the injection. I was a service writer at a Cadillac dealer in 1985. The 70's injection system was junk. If we saw a '76-'79 Seville come in the shop with driveability problems, we collected up front as half the time the owner wouldn't pay the bill. Good luck finding good parts. If I remember correctly, the injection had dual injectors, like a two-barrel.

Personally, if I was doing this I'd go with either Edelbrocks system or Holly's system. Use the best four barrel intake you can get.

As for a trans, the smart way to go would be a 4L80E. These are the trans used in big block trucks and vans. Electronically controlled HD overdrive transmission. And I don't think I use 2.73's. I'd probably use something between 3.00-3.50.

If the distributor is the only issue we can build you a distributor to trigger any system and use your old drive gear etc.
I have done up a couple systems using the Caddy fuel rail replacing the caddy injectors with bosch units and a GM ECM from a GM engine etc.

The 76-79 Caddy fuel injection was port fuel injection with 8 injectors; 1 per cylinder. The throttle body was just that, a basic 2 barrel butterfly valve. I used to be a driveability tech at a Caddy dealership and made pretty good money on them.

Starting in 1980 Caddy with the 369 engine Caddy changed over to a 2 barrel TBI (throttle body injection) system.

GMC Bubba, can you give some more details on the upgrade? which injectors, ECM, etc. I'm trying to build a megasquirt but life keeps getting in the way

    Thanks

  9. The 500 Cadillac in my Model A was from a '75 donor car with factory FI, diddn't run when I got it and I had every intention of using a Edelbrock intake anyways but the guy I got the car from is a Caddy guy and he wanted the FI and computer back as part of the deal and I think Ed still has them. But it was all Bosch labeled stuff if I remember correctly.

I see you mentioned distributors. That is my bigest problem with the FAST system; they don't offer a cam-sensing distributor. I have to run it on bank-to-bank and it doesn't run quite right. Can you accomplish this mod using a MSD #8363 body or your own (472cid)????? You would also need to contact FAST to get the wiring right.

What we did was actually on a Oldsmobile engine ( used in the 79 Seville) that was in a customers reallly nice Olds wagon. We took the parts from a donor 79 Seville , upgraded the injectors to later bosch units, used a electronic HEI distributor and added a throttle plate adapter from a chevy tuned port unit ( Accel makes a throttle body adapter). We then used a factory GM ecm from later tuned port chevrolet v8 and a custom harness from " Larrys Electric " in Ruma Illinois. Lit it up and its been on the road every since....
I am a firm believer in using the factory ECMs when possible, most of us dont have enough life left to program a aftermarket unit to our paricular vehicle ( and i have tried most if not all of them).
You can make them idle , and you can make them drive down the road , you might even make then run wide open . BUT you will NEVER get all the factory blocks of info in the aftermarket units.......

I used the ecm and TBI unit from a 454 Chevrolet ss 454 truck. Made a mounting plate to bolt the TBI unit to a Edlebrock maniflod. I used a dist. from a 80-81 Cadillac limo. with a 368,these years of dist. are equiped with the ESC so they will hook right up to the Chevroleet wiring harness. Using ALL gm sensors and componants I have NEVER had any trouble at all!

I forgot to add that the ecm used with the 454 also was used with many other Chevrolets. If you want the number from the ecm let me know

    ATTA BOY !!!!!!!
Thats exactly like i was talking about in the thread above. The factory programing is great, the engine thinks its another engine , has fuel control based on map input vs throttle etc. And spark control to boot.....
